Royal SNUB: Why Diana is the reason Camilla NEVER became a Princess – but WILL be Queen
CAMILLA Parker Bowles became HRH The Duchess of Cornwall when she married Prince Charles in 2005 instead of taking the title The Princess of Wales – and the reason was all down to the late Princess Diana.
When Prince Charles and Princess Diana married in 1981, the world thought they were witnessing a fairytale come true. However, the Prince and Princess of Wales endured a turbulent marriage surrounded with speculation of affairs and arguments. The parents of Prince William and Prince Harry finally separated in 1992, and their divorce was finalised in 1996.
In her famous BBC Panorama interview, the late Princess Diana put the breakdown of her marriage to Charles partly down to his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, who the Prince later went on to marry.
Following Diana’s tragic death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Charles went public with his romance with Camilla and the couple eventually married in 2005.
However, Camilla was not given the title of Princess of Wales, the title Diana was given when she married Charles.
According to podcast “On Heir” starring royal experts Omid Scobie and Emily Andrews, the decision was “all down to PR”.
Emily explained: “When they [Charles and Camilla] were married in 2005, I think the situation both in the UK and abroad, the PR situation was felt that people were still very hostile to Camilla.”
People are said to have “remembered Diana” and not forgotten the famous “there were three of us in the relationship” quote.
“Prince Charles was essentially marrying the woman that he committed adultery with while he was still married to Princess Diana, so I think Clarence House were very sensitive about this fact and what she would be called,” Emily added.
Instead, Camilla was given the title HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, which is a version of another of Charles’ titles.
The royal experts then went on to discuss one of the biggest questions on the table at the moment – will Camilla become Queen when Charles becomes King?
An official statement released when they got married said she would be HRH the Princess Consort when Charles takes the throne.
However, author Robert Jobson claims Charles has always planned for Camilla to be named Queen.
“I think this is more of a PR situation,” Omid explained.
“We saw her slowly introduced as the future Queen of this country and it’s taken a long while for her to be as popular as she is now.”
Ms Andrews added that “behind the scenes” she has been told Charles “wants Camilla to be Queen”.
She added: “He would feel that if she were called anything other than Queen it would be a massive slight on her for all the hard work she does.”
