Royal snub: Brutal way Prince William once dumped Kate – ‘got the message’

THE DUKE and Duchess of Cambridge’s relationship has inspired royal fans everywhere. But a brutal revelation about how William once dumped Kate has emerged in a new biography.

While they may be the picture of happiness now, their relationship hasn’t always been easy, with some considerable bumps in the road prior to getting married and having a family together. Kate and William met at the University of St Andrew’s in 2001 where they were both studying for their undergraduate degrees.

They have mostly gone from strength to strength, with Kate becoming a well received member of the Royal Family and their 2011 wedding being on of the most popular events in recent British history.

But on the road to happiness, the couple broke up twice prior to becoming engaged and subsequently married; once in 2004, and again in 2007.

William later admitted that they “were both very young” and “finding ourselves” during those times.

But the 2007 break up was actually incredibly brutal – at least for Kate, who was on a receiving end of a pretty unpleasant phone call, it has been revealed.

According to royal historian Robert Lacey, author of the new biography Battle of Brothers, Prince William was “uncertain” about his relationship with Kate, who he had been with for almost six years at the time.

What is even more brutal about the albeit short-lived break up, is that he did it while Kate was at work.

At the time, Kate worked as an accessories buyer for Jigsaw.

Lacey writes: “Kate excused herself from a meeting at Jigsaw, the fashion store with which she’d recently started working, to take a call from William in a room out of earshot of the other buyers.

“She shut the door for more than an hour. When she came out, she was single.”

Despite the significant blow, Kate was determined not to let the break up get the better of her, and according to Lacey was sighted enjoying herself on the London party circuit.

Apparently, William “got the message quicker than he or anyone else expected,” the author has claimed.

“The prince missed his family — which by now meant the Middleton family.

“One pillar of William’s year at Sandhurst had been his regular Friday night escapes to Bucklebury, where he could collapse and be mothered by Carole — and also fathered by the quiet and affectionate Michael who, whisper it, could provide a better ear for confidences, on some issues, than Prince Charles.”

Of course, as we know now it was never really over, and the couple got back together a matter of weeks later, when they were spotted at a party together in Dorset.

Three years later the couple were to be engaged – announced in October 2010, William proposed to Kate during a safari in Kenya.

He proposed with his late mother’s diamond and sapphire engagement ring.

The beautiful ring has a deep blue 12-carat sapphire surrounded by a halo of 14 round diamond accents set on an 18K white gold band.

Its significance lies in that it was originally selected by Princess Diana in 1981 shortly after accepting Prince Charles’s proposal.

Prince William said at the time of his engagement that giving the ring to Catherine was his way of making sure his mother didn’t miss out on his wedding day.
