Royal shock: Why stunned Queen looked at ‘mad’ Princess Diana after brutal question

QUEEN ELIZABETH was once left stunned after her then-daughter-in-law asked her and members of the Royal Family a brutal question, unearthed accounts reveal.

Throughout the years, Diana endured a difficult relationship with the Royal Family following her marriage to the Queen’s son Prince Charles in 1981. But one encounter during a Christmas lunch at Sandringham damaged relations even further with Diana said to be looking mad after her question surrounding the Royal Family and whether it would be relevant in a federal Europe. Writing in the 1992 book ‘Diana – Her True Story’, author Andrew Morton revisited the moment and the reaction of those sat around the dinner table.

He wrote: “The Queen, Prince Charles and the rest of the royal family looked at her as if she were mad and continued with their debate on who shot the last pheasant of the day, a discussion which occupied the rest of the evening.

“As a friend says: ‘She finds the monarchy claustrophobic and completely outdated with no relevance to today’s life and problems.

“She feels that it is a crumbling institution and believes that the family won’t know what has hit them in a few years’ time unless it changes too’.”

Diana separated from Prince Charles in 1991 following 10 years of marriage.

During her time as a member of the Royal Family, Diana became one of the most recognisable and popular faces in the world.

On the specific day Diana separated from Charles, one royal expert has spoken of the touching question Diana uttered to Charles.

Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’ in 2000, Ingrid Seward spoke of the moment the pair met for the first time following their separation.

The two met in Kensington Palace in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment.

Walking into the room, Diana allegedly asked Charles, “Why did this have to happen?”.

Also writing in the same book, Ms Seward revealed the strain of public life on the royal.

Princess Diana tragically died in 1997 just a year after her divorce from Prince Charles became official.

Their relationship was plagued with allegations of infidelity and it would become even more toxic after the pair split.

Yet, they tried to remain on good terms to support their two sons – Prince William and Harry.

Charles went on to marry Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

However, in the years after Charles and Diana announced their split in 1992, their son William would help comfort his mother when she began carrying about the breakdown of her relationship.

Speaking on the 2012 documentary ‘Prince William at Thirty’, expert Katie Nicholl noted one particular episode which showed William’s strength in supporting Diana.

She said: “There’s one really moving story when Diana was in tears in her bathroom and William was pushing tissues under the door because he could hear her crying.”

Jennie Bond, the ex-BBC royal expert, also claimed that William would say to Diana that it’ll be “alright” and that he’d “look after you”.

She added: “It was all the wrong way round for William.

“He was having to comfort his mother when she should have been looking after him, he was just a little boy.”
