CAMILLA, Duchess of Cornwall, made a “spectacular misreading” of Princess Diana, according to leading royal expert, leading her to support the relationship she was developing with Prince Charles.
Camilla met Prince Charles in 1971 and the couple became romantically involved until breaking up in 1973. The couple reportedly rekindled their relationship after Louis Mountbatten, uncle to his father, was murdered by the IRA in August 1979.
However Prince Charles was under intense pressure to select a different women to marry and in 1981 married Lady Diana Spencer, who became Princess Diana, after first meeting her in 1977.
According to Sarah Bradford, writing in her biography of the princess titled ‘Diana’, Camilla was initially supportive of the relationship.
She wrote: “Lady Diana Spencer, tall and blonde, curvey (as she then was) with a clear English-rose complexion, very young, impeccably born and with no scandal attached to her name, perfectly fitted all the criteria for a royal bride.
“Given that the Prince had to marry and seemed to be attracted to Diana, Camilla, in a spectacular misreading of Diana’s true character, saw it as in her own interest that Charles should choose such a shy young girl who would pose no threat to her position in his heart and mind.

“It suited her to befriend Diana and encourage Charles towards the girl she truly believed to be the best choice available.
“She had already effectively seen off Anna Wallace.
“Diana, younger, less fiery, seemed infinitely more malleable.”
Whilst still married to Diana, Charles conducted an extramarital affair with Camilla which triggered outrage when it became publicly available.

In 1992 Charles and Diana separated and the former couple went on to formally divorce in 1996.
Whilst they were married the royal couple had two children; Prince William who was born in 1982 and Prince Harry who was born in 1984.
In 1997, just one year after separating from Charles, Diana was killed in a Paris car crash.
Charles and Camilla eventually rekindled their relationship and went on to be married at Windsor Guildhall in April 2005.

After the wedding Camilla began using the title Duchess of Cornwall, her husband’s secondary designation.
The title Princess of Wales, which Camilla legally also holds, is not used due to its close association with Diana.
In March of this year Prince Charles was diagnosed with coronavirus, but he only experienced mild symptoms.
The future monarch self-isolated in Scotland whilst recovering from the potentially deadly infection.
As much of the world was forced into lockdown in March members of the royal family became scattered around Britain and beyond.
The Queen, who due to her age fell into a high risk category for the disease, isolated in Windsor Castle.
William and Kate, along with their three children, moved out of Kensington Palace and into Anmer Hall in Norfolk.
