Meghan, 37, was inspired by her favourite childhood comic character ‘Archie Andrews’ which was introduced to her by Mr Markle, according to a former friend. The Duchess of Sussex, during her early years growing up in the US became “obsessed” with the ginger-haired animation, and reading the books became Meghan and her father’s cute “activity together”. It is suggested by naming the seventh-in-line to the throne after such a fond memory, Meghan is ready to “reach out” to her father who lives along in Mexico.
A friend of the Duchess told The Sun: “She would spend her weekends going to vintage stores to buy the comics.
“This could be a little nod to her dad. It was him who instilled that hobby into her, that was their activity together.
“He would drive her around and also surprise her with vintage volumes. She had at least 100. This may be a way to reach out to her dad, even after all that’s happened.”
Despite having little known contact with Meghan, Mr Markle said he was “delighted” by the birth of his grandson and hoped he would “serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour”.
In a statement Mr Markle said: “I’m delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well. I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour.
“God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen.”
Mr Markle was cut out of Meghan’s life after a series of public blunders and outbursts.
Before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry on May 19 last year, Mr Markle staged paparazzi pictures where he was photographed being measured up for a suit.
The 74-year-old later insisted he was being “shunned and ghosted” by Meghan and has since publicly appealed for his daughter to reach out to him.
In December 2018, Mr Markle told Good Morning Britain he was “disappointed” the Duchess had not responded to any of his messages.
Meanwhile, in February this year it emerged in a leaked letter that Meghan told him her heart was “broken into a million pieces” due to his behaviour and explosive interviews attacking the royals.
Meghan and Harry’s son arrived into the world on Monday at 5.26am, weighing 7lb 3oz.
