PRINCE CHARLES dated heiress Anna Wallace before he met Lady Diana Spencer – however she broke things off with the Prince of Wales after watching him dance with Camilla Parker Bowles, a royal biographer claims.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana married in their fairytale wedding ceremony in 1981 but, from the start, the Princess of Wales had misgivings about Charles’ former girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles. Camilla married her first husband, Andrew, in 1973 in a swift move that broke off her initial romantic relationship with the Prince of Wales and left him heartbroken. In her 2017 biography, “The Duchess: The Untold Story”, royal author Penny Junor explains how the Prince of Wales’ relationship with Camilla was a problem for his girlfriend before Diana, too.

Ms Junor writes how, when Charles met Diana in 1980, “he had just broken up with Anna Wallace”.

Ms Wallace was a Scottish heiress and reportedly rejected the Prince of Wales’ marriage proposals twice during their relationship.

Ms Junor continues: “Charles had taken her to two successive balls and then danced with Camilla for most of both evenings.

“Anna dumped him with the words: ‘No one treats me like that – not even you.’”

The royal author adds: “He was now 32. The press was on his case and so was his father, who he wanted nothing more in life than to please.”

The pressure led the Charles and Diana’s engagement in 1981, although Ms Junor argues that Charles’ “catastrophic” decision was based on his reading of a note from Prince Philip, which he “misinterpreted” as an ultimatum.

By around 1978 or early 1979 Charles and Camilla had rekindled their romantic affair, however they broke it off again after Charles became engaged to Lady Diana Spencer.

Nevertheless, the Princess of Wales was uncomfortable with the pair’s close friendship and reportedly told her butler Paul Burrell that she was looking for Camilla when she walked down the aisle at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981.

In 1994, the Prince of Wlaes admitted that his affair with Camilla began again in 1986 when his marriage to Diana had irretrevably broken down.

Prince Charles and Camilla eventually married in 2005, when they tied the knot at Windsor Guildhall.
