PRINCE WILLIAM was once forced to spend the night sleeping on the streets in 2009 in a move that would have likely impressed his late mother.

In a sleeping bag next to a group of wheelie bins near Blackfriars Bridge, the Duke of Cambridge bedded down for a long, treacherous night. William, 27 years old at the time, spent the night sleeping outside at an event organised by Centrepoint, in his role at the time, as patron for the charity. In her book, ‘William and Harry’ royal correspondent Katie Nicholl praised William for his charitable efforts.
She writes: “It was amazing when he slept rough on the street.”
“It was quite extraordinary that he was able to do that.”
There were a number of hairy moments for the young Prince as he was almost run over by a road sweeper.
Writing on the Centrepoint website the organisations chief at the time Seyi Obakin said: “He was determined to do it as a patron in order to raise awareness of the problem and to be able to understand a little better what rough sleepers go through night after night.”

Mr Obakin challenged William to experience being homeless for a night after the Prince previously made a speech that year to mark Centrepoint’s 40th anniversary, he urged the charity to redouble its efforts to end youth homelessness.
Prince William may have been inspired to support these types of charities from the early work of his mother, Princess Diana.
Ms Nicholl writes: “Diana would have loved it.
“Diana was always passionate about her work with homeless people and William felt the same.

“William and Harry have had more choice than Diana in terms of choosing their patronages.”
Princess Diana made homeless people a cornerstone of her humanitarian causes.
In 1993 she took William and Harry with her on a visit to a homeless shelter, The Passage.
He claimed his visit taught him the values of respect, dignity and kindness to the vulnerable which he has carried with him since.
Earlier this year Prince William was named as patron of The Passage.
