Royal news: What career did Kate Middleton have to give up to become a royal?

It is hard to remember a time before Kate was the Duchess of Cambridge, and a full-time royal, however before she was catapulted into the public sphere, the Duchess had a career in the fashion industry. So what did Kate have to give up to become a royal?

Kate was thrust into the spotlight when her engagement to Prince William was announced in November 2010.

At the time she was known as Miss Middleton and said joining the Royal Family was a “daunting prospect”.

However, now she is a fully fledged royal and the world recognises her as the Duchess of Cambridge, mother of two and of course future Queen.

But before she joined Britain’s most famous family what did Kate do for a living?

The Duchess of Cambridge ended her time at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland in 2005.

After graduating with a History of Art degree, she briefly worked for her parents business Party Pieces, which supplies party goods.

However, just one year later, she moved on to work as a part-time accessorises buyer for the retailer Jigsaw.

The company’s founder Belle Robinson told the Evening Standard in 2008, she was overjoyed by her attitude despite the press surrounding Jigsaw’s head office in Kew.

She said: “I was so impressed by her.

“She sat in the kitchen at lunchtime and chatted with everyone from the van drivers to the accounts girls. She’s wasn’t precious.”

However, in November 2007 she left Jigsaw, reportedly to have some time to herself.

She was considering a career in photography, but rejoined her parent’s company Party Pieces.

Kate began working as a photographer, website designer and marketing officer for the company.

She launched a junior firm to the firm called ‘First Birthdays’ and according to the Duke and Duchess’ website, her roles included catalogue design and production, marketing and photography.

She continued to work with her family until January 2011, just months before she married Prince William.

When William and Kate announced their engagement in November 2010, Kate said joining the Royal Family was “nerve-wracking.”
