ROYAL fans around the world were shocked this week when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they would be “stepping back” from their roles as senior royals. But according to palace insiders, there are fears the move could be “the beginning of the end” for the couple’s role within the Royal Family.
Via their official @sussexroyal Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they would be dividing their time between the UK and North America. Although they announced they were relinquishing their roles as frontline royals, the pair will continue to support the Queen.
In a statement published on the social media platform, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
Following the shock announcement, Buckingham Palace released their own statement on the matter, which read: “Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage.

“We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
The statement prompted speculation the Royal Family had not been informed of the couple’s announcement prior to its publishing.
Members of the family were reportedly disappointed by the couple’s decision.
But according to reports, meetings of senior aides from Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace look optimistic, with all sides positive they can reach an agreement.

A senior royal source told The Daily Express: “The talks are progressing well and the governments are now involved.”
Prince Charles is said to be desperate for the Royal Family to rally around the couple.
According to the Mirror, a senior palace source said: “There’s a genuine fear from Charles that this could be the beginning of the end for Harry and Meghan’s involvement with the family and that, in his words would be ‘an utter tragedy’.
“Charles has implored everyone to work together to bring them back into the fold before it is too late, as he realises the benefits they have as a couple and indeed for the popularity of the monarchy across the world.
It has been said Prince Charles is seeking to “slim-down” the monarchy when he ascends the throne, but was reportedly disappointed to hear of the couple’s decision.
The senior palace source added: “He’s spoken at length with both William and Harry over the last year and outlined his plans, which have all been ratified by the Queen – that William and Kate will be primed and ready to carry on the long-held traditions of the family, while Meghan and Harry will be able to spread their wings and have a far more fluid role.
“Both brothers were until recently, it seemed, in complete agreement with the plan and, despite a falling-out over the last year, committed to making it work for all parties.
“But the urgency with which Harry and Meghan have pursued their intentions to break out on their own even more than had been agreed upon has caused great alarm.”

Before news of the couple’s decision broke, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the UK earlier this week.
Along with son baby Archie Harrison, the Sussexes had spent a six-week break from royal duties away from the royal bubble in Canada.
Now Harry and Meghan have announced their decision to live in ‘North America’, many reports have suggested the pair will be residing in Canada.
The Duchess of Sussex is believed to have returned to the country after the news was announced, where son baby Archie was being looked after by a friend.
