Diana and Charles’ relationship ended bitterly in 1996 and according to one royal expert, even at the beginning, the cracks had begun to show for the pair. Although the pair were happily welcomed to the castle by the household, the joy would not last for long. Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, Ingrid Seward has revealed the moment during their honeymoon whereby things began to go awry.
Describing how Diana’s confidence began to “slip away” around the Royal Family, Ms Seward revealed how Diana went from joyous to an outsider among her in-laws.
She wrote: “The Royal Family had gone out of their way to welcome her back to the castle which she had always professed to adore and which, if the fates had been kinder, would one day have become her home.
“But for the moment this was her mother-in-law’s house, governed by her mother-in-law’s rules, and instead of settling back and enjoying her good fortune, Diana felt like an outsider who was about to be swallowed up by a family which bewildered and soon overawed her.
“Her abiding memory of that day, she told me, was not one of exhilaration or joy, but of ‘inadequacy’.”
