Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, 81, has had a heartbreaking run of it. The royal has lost a string of very dear family members in recent years. These are the royal family members Princess Beatrix has had to mourn.
Princess Beatrix was Queen of the Netherlands for more than three decades until her son, Willem-Alexander, succeeded the throne in 2013.
Beatrix reigned from 1980 until 2013 and during that time, as well as most recently, the Queen coped with the deaths of several loved ones.
The Princess lost her youngest sister Princess Christina last Friday.

Christina died at the age of 72 following a lengthy battle with bone cancer.
The Dutch royal’s tragic death was the latest in a string of losses her older sister Beatrix has had to cope with.
In the last decade Princess Beatrix had to see her husband, her parents, her son and now her sister laid to rest.
Prince Beatrix first met her husband Claus von Amsberg in 1962.
They married in 1965 a move that flew in the face of anti-German sentiment in the Netherlands which remained following Word War II.
Despite all odds Prince Claus became one of the the most popular members of the Dutch royal family.
Beatrix and Claus remained married until his death on October 6, 2002.
Prince Claus was 76 when he died from Parkinson’s disease and heart failure.

Princess Beatrix’s parents were Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard.
Beatrix was the eldest of their four children.
In later life Juliana suffered from dementia and her health began to decline in the 1990s.
Juliana passed away in 2004 at the age of 94.
Princess Beatrix’s father Prince Bernhard tragically died soon after.
The Prince had cancer and deteriorated following his wife’s death, he died on December 1, 2004.

Princess Beatrix had to cope with the unthinkable when one of her three sons, Prince Friso died an untimely death.
The royal was struck down by an avalanche and buried for 15 minutes during a skiing trip in Austria in 2012.
The 44-year-old Prince remained in a coma for a year after the incident but suffered complications.
He died a year after tragic accident which caused him “massive brain damage.”
A palace statement at the time read: “Prince Friso has died of complications related to the hypoxic brain injury, which he suffered as the result of his skiing accident in Lech, Austria on 17 February 2012.”
