THE Queen brought smiles to the congregation as she attended the christening of Zara Tindall’s baby Lena yesterday. But some royal watchers noted she had been absent at the christening of Prince William and Kate’s son Louis.
Her Majesty looked elegant as ever in a pale pink coat, matching hat and glittering brooch for the service at St Nicholas Church in Cherington, Gloucestershire. Little Lena is the youngest of the monarch’s seven great-grandchildren and it was no doubt a proud day for her. She was spotted leaving the church carrying an order of service.
But some royal watchers’ eyebrows were raised at the monarch’s appearance as the Queen did not attend Prince Louis’ christening last July.
The decision was not made on health grounds and Prince William and Kate were said to be “relaxed” about it.
Prince Philip, 97, did not join the 92-year-old monarch for young Lena’s christening but a host of other royals made an appearance.
Dad-to-be Prince Harry was made godfather and he attended with wife Meghan Markle, who is due to give birth in April or early May.
Meghan dressed up her bump in a vintage Dior coat which she teamed with a small Victoria Beckham bag.
The loved-up couple put on a typically touchy display, leaving church holding hands.
Prince William and Kate were not able to make the family occasion as they were busy with St Patrick’s Day royal engagements.
Lena’s father former England rugby player Mike Tindall carried his nine-month-old daughter, who was dressed in an adorable christening gown, out of the church.
Her sister Mia, five, was previously blessed at the same venue.
Equestrian Zara looked stylish in a navy blue coat, stilettos and a pink headpiece.
Her parents Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, who split in 1992, also attended the christening.
Speaking afterwards, Revd Dr Gerald South said the service was “lovely”.
An onlooker told the Daily Mail: “There were between seven and ten police cars discreetly parked in a farmyard on the edge of the village, and we saw a few bobbies dotted around the village.
“But considering the number of royals in attendance, it was a surprisingly low-key event.”
Lena is Zara and Mike’s second child and she was born on July 18 last year.
