Royal bust-up: Spanish Queen Letizia PUSHES mother-in-law away from children

QUEEN LETIZIA appears to upset her mother-in-law in this astonishing scene during the Spanish royals’ annual Easter break in Majorca.

Queen Sofia looked every inch the proud grandmother as she put her arms round her granddaughters’ shoulders ready to pose for pictures at Palma Cathedral.

But her former TV newsreader daughter-in-law first stood in the way – and then seemed to push Queen Sofia’s arm away from her eldest daughter after a brief exchange of words that looked far from friendly.

The 79-year-old – backed today by family in Greece where she was born – put her arm back round Princess Leonor’s shoulder after resisting Queen Letizia’s challenge.

But the 12-year-old, standing beside her 10-year-old sister Infanta Sofia, finished the job her mother had started by preventing her grandmother having her way.

It was left to Queen Sofia’s husband King Felipe VI to try to restore peace as his 80-year-old father looked on nonplussed.

The apparent royal row happened on Sunday at the end of Easter mass but only started to make waves in Spain today as the footage emerged.

Several Spanish papers including island daily Diario de Mallorca had no hesitation in branding the incident a fight.

It said: “As is obvious from the footage, the situation was most uncomfortable for King Felipe VI, who tried to mediate as his father looked on with great surprise.”

Respected Spanish daily El Mundo described it as a royal tiff.

It said: “For the first time in four years, Juan Carlos joined the rest of the Spanish Royal Family for the celebration of the last day of Easter.

“However, the perfect harmony they demonstrated at the doors of Palma Cathedral appears not to have been so, certainly at one particular moment.”

No grandmother deserves that type of treatment!

Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece

El Pais described what happened as a “tense scene.”

And overnight London-born Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece, turned the incident international with a series of explosive tweets.

The 49-year-old, the wife of Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece and niece-in-law of the former Spanish Queen, wrote: “This makes me feel so angry” before adding: “No grandmother deserves that type of treatment! Wow, she’s shown her true colours.”

King Juan Carlos’s wife was said to be hoping to be pictured leaving the cathedral cuddling her granddaughters.

In the end the girls left first followed by their mother and grandmother.

There was no immediate official comment from the Spanish Royal Family’s spokesmen.
