PRINCESS Diana was convinced to give her explosive Panorama interview that detailed the difficulties she endured in her marriage to Prince Charles by Sarah Ferguson, according to a friend of the late Princess.
Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana had a complex relationship but the two enjoyed periods of real friendship and closeness. Fergie even influenced Diana to make one of her most controversial steps in 1995, a royal documentary reveals. Diana’s explosive interview for BBC’s Panorama has gone down in history as a turning point for the Princess of Wales and heralded her 1996 divorce from Prince Charles.
In it, she “struck back” at the establishment with her “deeply felt grievances” in the now-infamous interview with Martin Bashir.
The famous comment that there were “three of us in this marriage” came from this landmark television moment.
Diana also admitted that she had been in love with James Hewitt and expressed doubts about Charles’ suitability to be King.
2017 Amazon Prime documentary “Diana: The Woman Inside” hears from friends of the late Princess of Wales and royal insiders.
Biographer Penny Junor says: “She was very pleased with what she’d done at the time, she thought it was a great performance and she was thrilled. She rang up her friends and said ‘you must watch.’”
Simone Simmons reveals what was going on behind the scenes at the time of the infamous interview.
“She phoned me up the day after the interview,” she confirms.
Diana reportedly asked: “Did you watch television last night? What did you think?”
“I said, you made a real prat out of yourself,” says Simmons.
“She was horrified. I said ‘why on earth did this happen? Martin Bashir was supposed to be doing a programme about your charities. What happened?’”
In Simmons’ opinion, Bashir took advantage of the Princess at a weak moment.
“He duped her into it because he got her at a weak spot when she was a bit down,” she says.
She also reveals it was Sarah Ferguson’s idea for Diana to do the tell-all interview.
“I said, who advised you to do this awful thing?
“She said, well, Fergie and Ruby Wax.
“I said, yeah the brains of Britain! Oh my God!”
