ROYAL BACKLASH: Meghan Markle’s charm won’t change our minds, say Australia’s republicans

Meghan Markle will not be able to win over the Australian Republic Movement when she visits Sydney with Prince Harry, the campaign’s national director said just months before the Royal couple head Down Under.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit Australia in October for the Harry’s Invictus Games, which is being hosted in the New South Wales capital city.

Royalists hope Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be the Queen’s greatest charm offensive in the Commonwealth as the pair has undertaken a series of Commonwealth-related engagement.

Meghan Markle even launched a mini-charm offensive with her wedding veil which featured a nod to all 53 Commonwealth nations with their national flowers embroidered alongside her home-state of California’s flower on the veil’s trim.

However, Michael Cooney, national director of the Australia Republic Movement has insisted their movement will not be swayed when the Queen’s grandson and his wife visit Sydney later this year.

The Australian Republic Movement (ARM) website said: “As a republic within the Commonwealth, Australia will acknowledge the role the UK has played in our past, and future English monarchs will continue to visit.

“They would be welcomed as friends and equals by an Australian head of state.”

It is for this reason, Mr Cooney added: “The Prince and his wife Meghan will be very welcome guests in Australia and the Invictus Games in Sydney will be very inspiring.”

Lisa Wilkinson, whose husband is the chair of ARM and is also a member herself, has also backed this stance.

Writing after the Royal Wedding for Australia’s Ten Daily Ms Wilkinson admitted it was “hard not to get caught up in the myriad emotions”.

She added: “Sure, Harry may only be sixth in line to the throne, but Meghan represents everything the Royal Family have long been afraid of while also being everything they need to embrace, for their very relevance and survival.

“Ultimately, though, this is not about her, or them, it’s about 24 million of us, as a people, on the other side of the planet, knowing, firstly, that we are now more than capable of independence.”
