Andrew Morton, author and royal expert, says a friend believed Diana carried out royal duties due to a “deep sense of obligation”. He believes this “impelled her to keep up appearance for the sake of the public” during her time as a member of the family. Writing in his book ‘Diana: Her True Story’, Mr Morton also believes Diana receive “no advice from within the royal system”.

He writes: “A close friend says: ‘The public side of her was very different from the private side.

“‘They wanted a fairy princess to come and touch them and turn everything into gold.

“‘All their worries would be forgotten.

“Little did they realise that the individual was crucifying herself inside.”
