The Queen’s grandsons Princes William and Harry were mourning the loss of their beloved mum, and her son Charles reportedly “fell apart”.

The family were away on holiday when they were told the princess’ car had crashed in a tunnel in Paris, killing her, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul.

Charles and the Queen had a number of difficult decisions to make in the hours and days that followed, and according to experts they argued about a lot of the details.

But one of the few things they did agree on was that they had to focus their attentions on William and Harry.

Richard Kay, a journalist and friend of the Diana, told the Channel 5 documentary, Diana: 7 Days That Shock: “The Queen’s view was that the boys were their main priority.

“They took the decision they wouldn’t wake William and Harry and would wait until they woke up in the morning to tell them.”

One of the big disagreements was about who should go and collect Diana’s body from the hospital in Paris where she died.

“This was a surprising and brave move. He was an ex-husband, he had no right to be there other than as the father of her sons.

“Charles wanted to take the royal flight to Paris but the Queen wouldn’t allow it.

“Charles fought harder for Diana than he had ever fought for her in her lifetime.”

The morning after the row, Charles, William and Harry, along with the rest of the royal family attended church at Balmoral before he took the royal plane to France with Diana’s sisters, Jane and Sarah.

Tina Brown, author of The Diana Chronicles, claims that Charles was also extremely worried about how the public would react to the devastating news.

She said: “Charles absolutely fell apart.

“He instantly knew this was a terrible thing, that he would be blamed, that they would be blamed, for the death of Diana.”

Both boys were extremely close to Princess Diana and Harry had a heartbreaking final wish that he wanted to fulfil for his mum.

He wanted to travel to Paris with his father to bring Diana’s body back to the UK.

Charles, desperate to protect his young son, refused the request, and instead travelled alone to bring Diana’s body back to Britain.
