PRINCESS EUGENIE is one of the most popular members of the Royal Family with her down-to-earth approach to the public and positive attitude. But why is the Queen’s granddaughter not receiving an allowance from the Privy Purse like other royals?

Princess Eugenie is the ninth in line to the British throne and the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. The princess is said to have a particularly close relationship with the monarch, who she calls “granny”. For instance, Princess Eugenie often accompanies her grandmother to the Easter Day church service in Windsor, and to the Royal Windsor Horse Show and Royal Ascot.
Why does Princess Eugenie not receive allowance from the Privy Purse?
Princess Eugenie receives no allowance from the Privy Purse – despite the 29-year-old undertaking occasional public engagements, usually connected to the charities she supports.
However, the princess is not technically a working royal.

So because the princess usually does not carry out any public duties, unlike her cousins Prince William and Harry, she does not receive allowance from the Privy Purse.
Princess Eugenie works as an associate director at art gallery Hauser & Wirth, a position she has upheld since 2015.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar she said of her job: “I’ve loved art since I was very little.
“I knew I definitely wouldn’t be a painter, but I knew this was the industry for me. I love being able to share my passion for art with people.”

What is the Privy Purse?
The Privy Purse is the British Sovereign’s private income, mostly from the Duchy of Lancaster and was amounted to about £20.1m in net income for the year to March 31, 2018.
The Duchy of Lancaster is a 46,000 acres large estate held in trust for the Sovereign since 1399.
While the income is private, Queen Elizabeth II uses the larger part of it to meet official expenses incurred by other members of the British Royal Family.

In 2018, the Duchy of Lancaster was valued at approximately £533 million.
However, the Sovereign is not entitled to the Duchy’s capital, but the net revenues of the Duchy are the property of the Sovereign in right of the Duchy of Lancaster.
The Sovereign’s personal finances are looked after by the Keeper of the Privy Purse.
The Privy Purse meets both official expenditure incurred by The Queen as Sovereign and private expenditure.
