Princess Eugenie congratulated by Donald Trump for the royal wedding, but he makes one mistake
Princess Eugenie has been congratulated by Donald Trump following her Royal Wedding, but the US President appeared to make a mistake in his congratulation message.
The firebrand Republican tweeted today: “Princess Eugenie of York was a truly beautiful bride yesterday. She has been through so much, and has come out a total winner!”
But the US leader appears to have got the day of Princess Eugenie’s Windsor wedding wrong, saying yesterday – when Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew’s youngest daughter actually got married on Friday.
Donald Trump also appeared to refer to Eugenie’s battle with scoliosis when he tweeted, “she has been through so much, and has come out a total winner”.
Princess Eugenie, 28, stunned the world on Friday when she stepped out in a gorgeous off-the-shoulder gown by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, showing off scars from the back surgery she underwent aged 12.
The elegant dress had a deep V with an off-the-shoulder sleeve, showing off scars from a back operation.
Eugenie had insisted her scars be shown to inspire others, Buckingham Palace said, after a tough childhood battling scoliosis.
The princess received treatment at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), and ahead of her big day she reflected on the surgery and the importance of the charity during an interview with ITV’s This Morning.
She told host Eamonn Holmes: “I’m patron of their appeal and I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you’ll see on Friday, but it’s a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.
Princess Eugenie of York was a truly beautiful bride yesterday
“I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that.
“So that’s one really important one.
“But separate to that, other organisations that are there, it’s just very important that they get a chance to be honoured for the work that they do constantly, so it’s lovely that I can share this special day with them.”
Twitter users were quick to correct the American president on his mistake.
One tweeted: “The wedding wasn’t yesterday.”
A user said: “Wrong again. Her wedding was Friday.”
A Twitter user told him: “Wedding was on Friday mate lol,” while another added: “It took place on Friday….”
Mr Trump met Eugenie’s grandmother, the Queen, earlier this year during a visit to the UK.
He said he had got on “fantastically well” with the monarch after reportedly turning up late for the historic meeting.
The US leader told how his “fantastic” tea with the Queen overran because he and his First Lady wife Melania got on “so well” with the monarch.
During an impassioned speech at a rally following the visit, he said: “So, I then go up and meet the Queen and she is fantastic.
“We then go up and we have tea. And I didn’t know this – it was supposed to last 15 minutes but it lasted like an hour.
“Because we got along. And she liked our first lady and our first lady liked her.
“But we got along fantastically well. But the time went by – you know, sometimes you get along and the time goes by.”
