PRINCESS DIANA was once left feeling as though she had a “sword through her heart” after being told to enjoy her “last night of freedom in your life” ahead of her engagement to Prince Charles, unearthed accounts expose.

Diana famously married Prince Charles in a glamorous ceremony in 1981. Although their marriage would become plagued by allegations of infidelity, Diana was excited about her big day and the prospect of marrying into the Royal Family. But hours before her engagement announcement was made, Diana was left feeling low after her bodyguard made a startling admission to her.

Andrew Morton, author of the 1992 book ‘Diana – Her True Story’, detailed the encounter and how it left the young Diana feeling.

He wrote: “The night before the engagement announcement, which took place on February 24, 1981, she packed a bag, hugged her loyal friends and left Coleherne Court forever.

“She had an armed Scotland Yard bodyguard for company, Chief Inspector Paul Officer, a philosophical policeman who is fascinated by runes, mysticism and the after-world.

“As she prepared to say goodbye to her private life, he told her: ‘I just want you to know that this is the last night of freedom in your life so make the most of it’.

“Those words stopped her in her tracks.

“‘They felt like a sword through my heart.'”

The pair would marry in a union witnessed by millions of people from across the Commonwealth.

Street parties and other events were organised to coincide with the wedding, which experts say was one of the biggest moments in the 20th century for the Royal Family.

Charles and Diana’s relationship would eventually end in divorce in 1996, a year before she tragically died in a Paris car crash.

The Prince of Wales would later marry his former flame Camilla Parker Bowles.

However, in the years after Charles and Diana announced their split in 1992, their son William would help comfort his mother when she began carrying about the breakdown of her relationship.

Speaking on the 2012 documentary ‘Prince William at Thirty’, expert Katie Nicholl noted one particular episode which showed William’s strength in supporting Diana.

She said: “There’s one really moving story when Diana was in tears in her bathroom and William was pushing tissues under the door because he could hear her crying.”

Jennie Bond, the ex-BBC royal expert, also claimed that William would say to Diana that it’ll be “alright” and that he’d “look after you”.

She added: “It was all the wrong way round for William.

“He was having to comfort his mother when she should have been looking after him, he was just a little boy.”
