Where is Princess Diana buried? Island grave renovated to mark 20th anniversary of death
Princess Diana’s burial site has been renovated ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death. Here is a look at the final resting place of Princess Diana.
Prince William and Prince Harry attended a private ceremony to rededicate Diana’s grave on what would have been her 56th birthday on July 1.
The rededication of the grave at the Spencer family seat at Althorp House in Northamptonshire came ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death on August 31.
Princess Diana is buried on an island in an ornamental lake known as The Oval Lake within Althorp Park’s Pleasure Garden.
The wife of Diana’s brother Earl Spencer has been overseeing an extensive redesign of the lake at Althorp, home to the Spencer family for generations.
The revamp came after Diana’s former personal chef Darren McGrady visited her grave in August 2014 and complained that it was overgrown and covered in moss.
Mr McGrady shared photographs of the algae-covered lake on Twitter, saying: “Sad to see Earl Spencer has neglected Diana’s resting place.”
He added: “Please tidy up the vegetation on the island”.
Although Althorp estate admitted that algae was a problem, it said the burial site and a small temple where visitors can pay their respects were being properly maintained.
In 2015, new photographs of Princess Diana’s final resting place revealed vegetation growing over a memorial and moss covering a monument dedicated to her.
In response, an Althorp spokesman said: “The algae was present last year because of that summer’s exceptional heat – something that has not recurred this year.
“The island where the late Princess is buried has always had a full growth of mature trees, which give a rich panoply of foliage in the summer, which intentionally lends privacy to the Princess’s final resting place.
“The Temple is maintained and assessed on an annual basis.”
Then in May last year, it said: “The Oval Lake where Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest on September 6, 1997, is undergoing an extensive redesign to honour her memory.
“It will be completed in time for the 20th anniversary of her death, in August 2017.
“The island at Althorp is in the process of undergoing extensive remodelling, along with the rest of Althorp’s gardens.”
Althorp is currently owned by Diana’s brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, who delivered the eulogy at the princess’s funeral service at Westminster Abbey.
He then oversaw a private burial service at Althorp later the same day.
