Princess Diana devotedly slept on the floor beside Harry’s hospital bed when he was just three.

The Princess of Wales opted to stay beside her three-year-old son after he underwent surgery for a hernia.

A former friend of the late Diana has revealed the then-26-year-old chose to stay overnight at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The incident took place when young Harry was treated for the condition almost 30 years ago.

Diana insisted on sleeping on a mattress on the floor next to Harry’s bed to be close to him, according to singer Patti Boulaye OBE .

“It was her decision to sleep next to him” said Patti, describing how Diana had told her at the time hospital staff had given her the mattress so she could sleep beside her son.

“She must have been a mother and a half,” she added.

The princess was previously reported to have slept in a room next to her son, who underwent the surgery in May 1988 after being diagnosed with a minor hernia, according to the Mirror.

Patti, who met Diana for the first time in the West End near Trafalgar Square, said that it was the princess’s own decision to sleep on the floor beside her son.

“It was wonderful,” she said. “She was so normal. This is what I loved about her”.

Diana took Harry home at midday on May 10, 1988, following the successful surgery.

At the time, the little boy’s dad, Prince Charles, was reported to be away on vacation, while his older brother, William, was five.

Patti made the revelation about The People’s Princess as we sat down with her to speak about her life, her remarkable career and her new show, Billie and Me , after meeting at the St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes awards dinner.

Meeting at a cafĂ© in west London, we discussed everything from her experiences with Diana and friendship with “lovely” Michael Jackson, to her childhood in Nigeria.

Referring to the late princess, Patti recalled how they once had lunch together, along with Paul McCartney’s wife, Linda McCartney and a fourth guest.

On another occasion, they chatted about Diana’s beloved sons, and her recent trip to Canada, during a Help the Aged event at the Hilton Hotel.

And in one conversation, they spoke about press coverage of the princess.

“We had this conversation about the press,” said Patti.

It comes after Prince Harry spoke lovingly about his late mother Princess Diana at a summit in Chicago – calling her his “ideal role model”.

Speaking at the inaugural summit of former US president Barack Obama’s foundation, the Prince glowed with pride as he explained why he thought she had earned the moniker ‘People’s Princess’.

He said: “I think she had a lot in common with everybody, but she would also listen.

“(She put) her name and platform towards some of the big issues which had never been talked about before.

“We suffer from this illusion, or reality I suppose, where some problems become so big no one wants to get involved.

“She was the one who wanted to change that.

“I will always look up to her as my ideal role model. Everything she did was having an impact, it was making a difference.”

He added that he believed Diana had “rewritten the rule book” for the royals, and the role they play in society.

He said: “All the people she was working with would be incredibly grateful for her pushing those boundaries.”
