Princess Diana always called Prince Charles THIS name during their ‘doomed’ romance
PRINCESS DIANA was married to Prince Charles from 1981, but their the pair divorced in 1996. Diana always referred to her husband-to-be by a certain title during their courtship, a royal documentary has revealed.
Princess Diana, who died at the age of 36, always referred to her husband, Prince Charles, 69, by a certain name during their courtship.
The pair courted for six months before Prince Charles proposed in 1981, and they married later that year, later divorcing in 1996.
But what did Diana call Prince Charles in the early days of their romance in 1981?
During their courtship, Lady Diana always referred to Prince Charles as ’Sir’,” Andrew Morton, a royal biographer revealed.
Andrew spoke in an interview as part of The Royal Wives of Windsor, an ITV show which aired at 9pm this evening.
He added that no one could imagine Meghan Markle, 36, referring to her future husband Prince Harry, 33, in the same way.
Andrew also spoke about the period in which Prince Charles and Diana began courting, when Charles had turned 30 and Diana was just 19.
“At the age of 30, Charles was showing no signs of settling down.
“On paper, Diana was absolutely perfect as a royal bride,” he said, referring to Diana’s virginity and aristocratic background.
“All of these things seemed to be important at this time,” he added.
Princess Diana always used to call Prince Charles “Sir”, according to a royal biographer
“Everyone was acting in what they perceived to be the best interests of the institutions but it was doomed.
“But it was not a fairytale, it was a nightmare,” Andrew added.
“I think it shows that there has been a breakdown in the class system when a royal marries a commoner.”
Yesterday, as part of another ITV programme, Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer opened up to explain the lengths she went to in a bid to keep the garment a secret.
The programme, Invitation To A Royal Wedding, aired on Sunday 29 April at 9pm on ITV.
Elizabeth Emanuel, 64, was Diana’s wedding dress designer along with her now ex-husband David.
The team later went on to design a number of outfits for Princess Diana on her Gulf Tour.
Elizabeth explained the extreme measures she went to, to prevent anyone discovering what Diana’s wedding dress was like.
She said on the programme that she refused to let any of the unused dress material be thrown away.
“I kept every scrap and we had to be very careful not to let any scraps fall on the floor because we didn’t want them to end up in the rubbish,” she said.
“We had a lot of journalists going through the rubbish to see what colour the dress was so I kept them pretty much as they were on the cutting table.”
