PRINCESS DIANA and Prince Charles suffered a breakdown of their marriage and divorced in 1996 – but which other doomed royal couple did Diana believe were a perfect match?

The Princess of Wales had a soft spot for Prince Andrew’s American ex-girlfriend Kathleen “Koo” Stark. According to 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, she described the actress as “sweet” and “gentle”, and believed the pair “suited each other so well”. However, Andrew and Ms Stark were to part due to a “tepidly erotic” film she starred in after she first arrived in London.

The film, entitled ‘Emily’ was directed by the Earl of Pembroke and, after its release, provocative images of Ms Stark circulated in the press.

The stigma of the movie eventually “poisoned” her relationship with Andrew and their love affair was “doomed”.

Diana reportedly told royal author Andrew Morton about her affection for Andrew’s former girlfriend.

In his book, he claims she told him: “Sweet Koo adored him. She was terribly good to have around.

“Very gentle and looked after him, all her energies were directed towards him. They suited each other so well.”

Mr Morton described how the couple went on holiday to the Caribbean island of Mustique in 1982, where Princess Margaret had a property.

They reportedly flew under the pseudonym ‘Mr and Mrs Cambridge’.

The prince went on to marry Sarah Ferguson in July 1986 in a lavish wedding at Westminster Abbey.

The Duke and Duchess of York had two children together, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

However Andrew and ‘Fergie’, ended up getting divorced in 1996 after 10 years of marriage.

Princess Diana’s royal romance also ended in separation and divorce that same year, after it was rocked by at least two extramarital affairs.

It was Mr Morton’s 1992 book ‘Diana: Her True Story’ which revealed the affairs of Diana with Major James Hewitt and Charles with Camilla Parker-Bowles, now the Duchess of Cornwall.
