Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage was ‘over’ in THIS moment
Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage headed towards a downward spiral before they divorced in 1996, and one royal witness revealed the exact moment he knew their relationship was officially “over”.
Royal photographer, Arthur Edwards, recalled the time Charles and Diana embarked on a tour of Korea in November, 1992.
Mr Edwards, who has photographed the Royal Family for 44 years, was sent to take pictures of Charles and Diana in Korea while the royal couple attended a series of engagements.
He branded the tour a “miserable” affair for the couple, describing how Charles and Diana “couldn’t bear to be in each other’s company”.
Speaking to Yahoo’s The Royal Box, he said: “It was only when we went to Korea, the last tour, when you knew it was all over then because they couldn’t bear to be in each other’s company. It was so miserable.”
Mr Edwards knew a divorce was on the cards, as he watched the couple’s relationship slowly deteriorate over the years.
Charles’ and Diana’s Korean tour became known as the “Glums’ tour”, Mr Edwards said, because of how unhappy the royals appeared, so much so that even photographers realised their marriage was falling apart.
In December 1992, then-Prime Minister John Major announced the Prince and Princess of Wales were separating.
Mr Edwards said: “The tour was called the Glums’ tour, and that was so miserable.
“And a month later the Prime Minister announced in the House of Commons, and I suppose no one was then surprised, we watched them in Korea.”
Prince Charles and Diana married at St Pauls on 29 July 1981, in what seemed like a fairytale wedding to many.
Their relationship hit the rocks shortly after, and Diana and Charles slowly began to grow apart.
Diana suspected Charles was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend and now current wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.
Camilla was regularly involved in their lives, and Diana revealed several instances she knew she was more than just a friend to Charles.
Speaking in a series of secret interviews, documented by Channel 4’s ‘Diana: In Her Own Words’, the Princess of Wales said she always felt there were “three” people in her marriage.
She revealed a time when Camilla gifted Charles with a pair of cufflinks, with two letter C’s entwined on them.
Diana said: “We were opening our diaries to discuss various things. Out comes two pictures of Camilla.
“And on our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists. Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly.
“So I said ‘Camilla gave you those didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.'”
“And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea the two ‘C’s but it wasn’t that clever.”
Charles and Diana divorced in 1996, after the Queen sent them a letter advising them to end their marriage.
Diana died on 31 August 1997 in a Paris car crash.
