Princess Charlotte and Queen so similar ‘they could be same person’ – high-tech analysis
The resemblance between Princess Charlotte and her great-grandmother the Queen is so striking they could almost be the same person, a high-tech analysis of side-by-side photographs of the pair of them has revealed.
The close likeness has been remarked upon on a number of occasions since Charlotte was born.
And the analysis, carried out by Hassan Ugail, Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Bradford at the request of Express.co.uk, proved it was not just wishful thinking on the part of Royal watchers.
Professor Ugail uses cutting-edges techniques to examine images in minute detail, and put his skills to work comparing shots of four-year-old Charlotte and a young Princess Elizabeth at roughly the same age.
He looked at three pictures of the Queen set alongside two of Charlotte, with one having a similarity index of 68.2 per cent, while the others were 63.7 percent and 62.2 percent respectively.
They are indeed strikingly similar.
Professor Hassan Ugail
He said: “They are indeed strikingly similar.
“Usually, if a comparison between two images return 70 percent or higher we consider it to be the same person.
“In this sense, I feel some existing facial recognition systems may even fail to distinguish between the two, given the corresponding images are fed as input for comparison.”
Professor Ugail used his techniques for an entirely different purpose recently, looking at two pictures said to show Anatoliy Chepiga, one of the men suspected of the Novichok nerve gas attack on Russian double agent Sergei Skripal at different stages of his life.
He concluded there was a 98.4 percent likeness, making it certain the pictures did indeed show the same person.
The results of Professor Ugail’s latest analysis did not surprise James Brookes, editor of royalcentral.co.uk
He told Express.co.uk: “It’s definitely something that’s been noticed in the past.
“From the photos, what strikes me most is the similarity with the Queen’s smile.
“It will be very interesting as she grows up to see how she changes, and who she ends up looking like.
“For example, with Prince George, I saw a picture the other day in which he looked very like King George VI.
“As Charlotte grows up we will see whether she looks like the Queen when she was a teenager.
“I suspect she is going to be taller than the Queen because Prince William is quite tall and so is Kate actually.
“We’ll just have to wait and see.”
The internet is awash with stories pointing out Charlotte’s similarity with her great-grandmother.
She has also inherited the Royal wave, as she proved when she acknowledge the press pack camped outside St Mary’s Hospital when she arrived with her father to meet new baby brother Prince Louis in April.
Her brother was more reticent, looking straight ahead and holding tightly to his father’s hand.
