PRINCESS BEATRICE celebrates her 31st birthday today, alongside her beau Edoardo – but the happy time for the princess comes in contrast to the year of heartbreak she suffered just last year.
Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are at the centre of rumours of a new royal wedding on the horizon. The eldest daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, who turns 31 tomorrow, has set tongues wagging by turning vegan – a move that her sister Princess Eugenie made in the run-up to her nuptials in 2018. However, as Eugenie was preparing to get married last year, Beatrice endured an emotionally turbulent time.
Podcast “Royals”, from Australian magazine New Idea, heard from royal expert Angela Mollard, in an episode that first aired in March.
Ms Mollard said: “[Beatrice] spent 10 years with a very nice chap called Dave Clark.
“He was an Uber executive.
“A decade together – I think it was probably one of those relationships where they were comfortable, they really liked each other, but there just wasn’t that spark.

“It never led to the aisle.”
Podcast host Rebecca Hyde said: “I really thought they were going to get married!”
Ms Mollard agreed: “I did too, they were together for such a long time.”
However, after the pain of splitting in 2016, Beatrice had to face a difficult year of heartbreak in 2018.
Ms Mollard continued: “He went on and married someone within [two years] of their separation.
“That’s always hard.
“So, she lost her boyfriend, [then] her sister got married.”

Meanwhile, Mr Clark married his fiancée Lynn Anderson at luxury Italian resort in July 2018.
When Beatrice and Mr Clark split in October 2016, the princess was reported to be “devastated”.
Prince William got to know Mr Clark when they were at the University of St Andrews together.
The prince reportedly introduced him to his cousin at the birthday party of Pierce Brosnan’s son Sean in 2006.
However, William did not invite his former friend to his 2011 royal wedding to Kate Middleton, as he had worries over Mr Clark being “indiscreet”.
The prince is well-known for not tolerating breaches of confidence, with one friend recalling, “You can forget it if you abuse his trust”.
A source told the Daily Mail in 2015: “William isn’t a huge fan of Dave.
“It’s fair to say that if Beatrice had asked the Queen for permission to marry Dave, and she in turn asked William privately for his view, she may not have been given a glowing report.
“Dave is a nice guy and he makes Beatrice happy, which is important.
“But William has always been wary of him. There is a clash of personalities.”

When the line of succession shifted on the the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015, Beatrice no longer needed to ask Her Majesty for permission to marry.
She became the seventh-in-line to the throne, and therefore fell outside of the requirement to seek permission.
However, although Beatrice was reportedly keen to marry, her ultimatum to Mr Clark to either propose or split ended the relationship.
Fergie and Prince Andrew, who were said to “adore” Dave, were reportedly “completely shocked” by the break-up.
