Princess Anne still able to spend Christmas with Zara Tindall as royals escape Tier 4

PRINCESS ANNE and Zara Tindall will be relieved to have dodged the Tier 4 restrictions which came into force for large parts of the UK on Sunday. The royals’ Christmas plans are unlikely to have been disrupted by the new measures and they could still spend the day together.

Princess Anne, 70, lives at Gatcombe House on the Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire. The stately home and its stunning grounds were gifted to Anne by Queen Elizabeth II, 94, upon her marriage to first husband Mark Phillips in 1973. Anne’s two grown-up children Zara Tindall, 39, and Peter Phillips, 42, both live in homes on the estate with their respective families and are expected to spend Christmas Day with their mother.

On Saturday night the Government withdrew plans to allow up to three UK households to mix from December 23 to 27, limiting the relaxation of restrictions to Christmas Day only.

Large parts of Britain were also placed under Tier 4 restrictions from midnight on Sunday with household mixing banned altogether.

Britons in Tier 4 now face spending a lonely Christmas as the Government has enforced a ‘stay at home’ message in a bid to curb the spread of a new strain of Covid-19.

While Tier 4 restrictions have been brought in for parts of South East and East England including all of London, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Kent and Medway, Princess Anne and her family will be relieved that Gloucestershire has remained in Tier 2.

How will Princess Anne spend Christmas?

According to Government guidelines, the following is permitted for Britons not living under Tier 4 restrictions.

The Government website states: “If you do not live in a Tier 4 area, you may see a maximum of two other households (your ‘Christmas bubble’) on Christmas Day (December 25).

“You cannot see anyone from a Tier 4 area.”

As Zara, Peter and their respective families live a stone’s throw away from Princess Anne, she could welcome both her children and all four of their grandchildren on Christmas Day.

Zara is currently expecting her third child with husband Mike and the couple have two daughters – Mia, six, and Lena, two.

Zara’s brother Peter separated from his wife Autumn earlier this year but she still lives nearby in Gloucestershire.

The estranged couple co-parent their two daughters – Savannah, nine, and Isla, eight, and remain on good terms.

Given that they separated on good terms it seems likely Autumn will join Peter and her children for Christmas at Anne’s too.

Anne and her husband Timothy Laurence may have hoped to visit the Queen, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, over the Christmas period but new restrictions have made this a write off.

As of Sunday, Prince Philip and the Queen are both living under Tier 4 restrictions at Windsor Castle in Berkshire.

The Queen and Philip usually spend Christmas at Sandringham with the rest of the Royal Family but cancelled the annual meet-up amid the pandemic.

A long list of royal Christmas traditions are unable to go ahead this year including the Christmas Day visit to church and the Boxing Day pheasant shoot on the Sandringham Estate.

The Queen’s eldest son Prince Charles, 72, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 73, are another royal couple who have managed to escape Tier 4 restrictions.

They left Clarence House in London earlier in the week and intend to spend Christmas at their Gloucestershire home Highgrove.

The Royal Family will not reunite until Covid-19 restrictions allow them to do so which means they could go weeks without reconnecting with the Queen.
