PRINCE WILLIAM and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge are preparing for birthday celebrations later this week as Kate turns 38 – but, on her 21st birthday, William left her parents “dazed” for a brilliant reason, a royal biographer reveals.

Kate celebrates her 38th birthday on Thursday, and the Duke and Duchess have already been spotted at Sandringham with some close friends to mark the occasion. Over the years, Kate has seemed to prefer a quiet celebration surrounded by family for her birthday, and this is what she chose to mark her 21st in 2003. However, as their blossoming royal romance was a secret to most of the world at that point, William paid a hushed-up trip to the birthday girl that stunned her parents – who had never met the second-in-line to the throne before.

Royal author Christopher Anderson, in his 2011 book “William and Kate: A Royal Love Story”, takes a look at the romantic episode.

Mr Anderson writes: “Kate celebrated her 21st birthday that January 2003 with a small family party at home in Bucklebury.

“Halfway through the festivities, two Land Rovers pulled up Oak Acre’s gravel drive and a lone figure knocked on the door.

“William had slipped quietly out of London, and now he was meeting Kate’s dazed but not entirely surprised parents for the first time.

“William had slipped quietly out of London, and now he was meeting Kate’s dazed but not entirely surprised parents for the first time.

“He told them, ‘I wouldn’t have missed the chance to sing Happy Birthday to Kate for the world.’”

The author also explains how the young couple kept their growing romance tightly under wraps, adding: “Even at St. Andrews, only a handful of students knew that William and Kate were in the throes of a deepening love affair.”

This year, the happily married couple have stayed at home, too.

This weekend, they were seen with some close friends  on the Sandringham estate, where their county home Anmer Hall is located,  ahead of the Duchess’ birthday.

They are hosting Laura Meade – godmother to Prince Louis – along with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton, the Duke’s lifelong friend Thomas Van Straubenzee, and the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmodeley.

For Kate’s actual birthday on January 9, the Duke and Duchess have made a habit of staying at home at Kensington Palace with Prince George, Prince Charlotte and Prince Louis in the last few years.

However, some royal watchers have postulated that Kate and William may take some time out this year on the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique, where they holidayed as a family last summer.

The Court Circular, the diary of all royal engagements, does not currently list any engagements for the Cambridges during Kate’s birthday week.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are continuing to take time out of their royal schedule, too, after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex let the UK on a six-week break in November.

Although they were previously expected to be returning to their royal duties in the new year, there is still no word on when the Duke and Duchess will return to the UK.

Harry and Meghan are thought to still be in Canada after their Christmas and New Year break there.
