Prince William fury: Duke backs father Charles as he blasts The Crown’s ‘unfair depiction’

PRINCE WILLIAM has accused Netflix series The Crown of not showing a “very fair depiction” of the tumultuous marriage between his parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Prince William has slammed Netflix for using his parents’ marriage as a “simplistic way to make money”, according to close sources. The Duke of Cambridge’s disparaging comments were reportedly made in the wake of the “fanfare and furore” created by the release of The Crown Season 4. Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers joined ITV host Lorraine Kelly to speak about the depiction of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

He told viewers: “There’s been a lot written over the last few days since the season aired.

“The Crown has come out with a huge fanfare, and furore as well really.

“There are a lot of historical inaccuracies in this version of The Crown.

“Peter Morgan, the writer, has actually said that he did use artistic license in a lot of the scenes.”

Mr Myers continued: “He has imagined how the scenes played out.

“Certainly I can’t imagine William will be watching.

“He’s said previously to friends that he believed it was not a very fair depiction of his father or his parents’ marriage.

“He said that it was a simplistic way to make money, apparently.”

The commentator added: “Also Charles has told friends that he won’t be watching it.

“The depiction of Charles and Diana’s marriage is particularly worrying for the Royal Family.

“I don’t think they will be part of the 80 million people tuning in for the next couple of weeks.”

The US streaming giant is now being urged to add a disclaimer to the TV show.

Concerned commentators and sources close to the Royal Family have called for viewers to be warned that the series has scenes that are fiction and not fact.

Mr Morgan has robustly defended his right to creative freedom.

Speaking of an imagined interaction between Prince Charles and Lord Mountbatten, he said: “In my own head I thought that would have even greater impact on Charles if it were to come post-mortem, as it were. I think everything that’s in that letter that Mountbatten writes to Charles is what I really believe, based on everything I’ve read and people I’ve spoken to, that represents his view.

“We will never know if it was put into a letter, and we will never know if Charles got that letter before or after Mountbatten’s death, but in this particular drama, this is how I decided to deal with it.”
