PRINCE CHARLES’S visit to his father Prince Philip in hospital this afternoon is understood to have been made under “exceptional circumstances” in accordance with the King Edward VII Hospital’

Prince Philip, 99, was visited by his son Prince Charles, 72, at London’s private King Edward VII hospital on Saturday afternoon. The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted for non-emergency treatment on Tuesday evening and is expected to stay in until next week as a “precautionary measure.”

While the Duke is said to remain “in good spirits” Charles’s visit has prompted some confusion among fans on social media who have questioned whether or not it was in keeping with Covid-19 restrictions.

Buckingham Palace declined Express.co.uk’s request for comment on the matter but the hospital’s guidelines say visits are only permitted “in exceptional circumstances.”

Outlining its advice for visitors amid the current Covid-19 restrictions The King Edward VII’s website states: “Please attend hospital alone to avoid crowding and limit the number of people entering the building.

“In exceptional circumstances, you may be permitted a visitor or escort. If you think you fit into this category then please give us a call to discuss.”

Are hospital visits allowed during lockdown?

The Government guidelines around “compassionate visits” including hospital visits during lockdown are as follows:
“You may also leave home to visit someone who is dying or someone in a care home (if permitted under care home guidance), hospice, or hospital, or to accompany them to a medical appointment.”

While Buckingham Palace has not commented on the Prince of Wales’s visit to his father, news of the trip has sparked health fears for the Duke of Edinburgh from fans.

Daily Express royal correspondent Richard Palmer shared the news in a tweet which read: “Prince Charles is visiting his father the Duke of Edinburgh at the King Edward VII’s Hospital in London.”

Responding to the tweet, royal expert Marlene Koenig wrote: “that is not good, although I hope not.”

While another Twitter user put: “I hope Prince Philip is alright”, followed by a praying emoji.

A third wrote: “Should we read too much into this considering and please correct me if I’m wrong but I thought visitors weren’t allowed.”

Another expressed fears for Prince Philip’s health, writing: “Well that’s not good – cos of Covid aren’t visits banned unless life is coming to end?”

How is Prince Philip?

Buckingham Palace has not released a new statement on the Duke of Edinburgh’s health since he was first admitted to hospital on Tuesday.

At the time the royal household seemed keen to play down fears for the Duke stating it was a non-emergency matter and not related to COVID-19.

The statement read: “His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital in London on Tuesday evening.

“The duke’s admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s doctor, after feeling unwell.

“The duke is expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest.”

“Buckingham Palace gave no update on Philip’s condition.

“A source said he remained ‘in good spirits’.”
