Prince Harry looks ‘trapped’ with Meghan Markle in ‘awkward’ meeting

PRINCE HARRY seemed “awkward” and “trapped” during a virtual meeting alongside his wife, Meghan Markle, a body language expert has revealed.

On Monday, it was revealed that the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex joined a video conference with global young leaders from the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust last week. During the video call, Prince Harry, who was speaking from his home in Los Angeles, urged the Commonwealth to “acknowledge” its past wrongs.

He added that the Commonwealth, which is headed by his grandmother the Queen, needs to mimic those who have “acknowledged the past” and are “trying to right their wrongs”.

Body language expert, Judi James, observed the Duke’s body language during the meeting for FEMAIL, noting that Prince Harry looked “awkward” and “spoke down to the floor” at some points of the discussion.

Furthermore, his placement at the far side of the frame made it seem as if he was “trapped”.

Royal fans took to Twitter to express similar views, adding that the video was “uncomfortable” to watch.

One social media user even pointed out that it looked as though Prince Harry was being “held hostage”.

Ms James also suggested Prince Harry seemed to instantly “reflect” on his remarks about the Commonwealth, showing that he was aware of the effect they would have.

Ms James added that the Duke stayed “silent” for the first part of the call while Meghan gets the conversation started.

“The framing shows Meghan in almost the middle of the shot, able to utilise the space she has to her left to gesticulate and allow her passion to be illustrated as she speaks,” Ms James said.

“Harry, though, looks slightly trapped to one side, with no room to gesticulate and – at the start – no room to speak.”

The moment he starts talking the situation becomes more uncomfortable as it becomes apparent he does not have his wife’s authority in this occasion.

“Meghan is mesmerising but Harry either repeats her words or adds a ‘Yeah’ after she makes a point,” Ms James said.

“Unlike his wife, who adopts the solid eye-gaze that suggests active listening and devotion while he does speak, Harry even looks slightly awkward, gazing to his right and out of shot as she speaks before looking down at the floor.”

“Meghan’s points are made persuasively and her aim seems to be to inspire in a way that is lasting,” Ms James added.

“When Harry does speak his tone is more critical, with a more lecturing tone. He performs micro-shrugs and head tilts and his part seems to start and end with a camera jerk.”

The Duke looks almost instantly conscious of the importance of his comments on the Commonwealth, Ms James added, noting that Harry looked away in a moment of “reflection” after his remarks.

Ms James said: “It’s clear from Harry’s body language here that he realises the importance of his words as he brings his hand gestures higher and they seem to be conducting him and his words as much as adding emphasis.

“He falters slightly verbally and his eye-dart to the right returns. It’s up to Meghan to wrap his message up into a more powerful phrase about a ‘High tide raising all ships’ and her eloquence is at odds with Harry’s less structured and flowing style of delivery.

“When he ends this section he glances to his right again, which looks like a moment of reflection, possibly based on what he has just said.”

However, Harry attempts a more “humorous, self-effacing approach” later into the conversation.

Ms James said: “Eventually Harry does seem to decide to play to his strengths when he leans his head forward closer to camera and opts for a more humorous, self-effacing approach.

“Even this is slightly out of kilter with Meghan’s sense of passion and purpose though.

“She laughs and touches her hair but she also corrects him quickly.

“She leans in even closer to Harry after this, which shows like-minded thinking and affection, but which also hints at a desire to close him down for the end of their conversation.”
