Prince Harry forced to scrap plans to return to UK and meet Queen over Megxit review

PRINCE HARRY has been forced to scrap his plans to return to the UK and meet the Queen over his Megxit review, it has been reported.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex dramatically stepped down as senior royals in March last year to seek financial independence. As part of their deal, they agreed to have a 12-month review with the Palace, which is due on March 31. Harry was said to have planned to request a face-to-face meeting with the Queen in the UK.

However, a ban on non-essential travel as part of England’s third lockdown which started yesterday and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the US means the couple will not be able to travel from their new home in California.

Royal sources told Mirror Online that Harry has “not yet attempted to contact” the Queen to arrange a meeting of his 12-month royal review.

But he is expected to arrange a solution in the coming weeks.

Meghan and Harry have caused a stir among royal watchers recently after signing multi-million pound deals with Spotify and Netflix.

Royal commentators discussed the impact of these deals ahead of the review on Megxit arrangements.

Royal biographer Penny Junor said Harry and Meghan’s downfall in their new commercial ventures may have been rushed through as they no longer benefit from “gold standard” advisers at Buckingham Palace.

She added the palace would have checked their plans for pitfalls.

Ms Junor added the couple’s deal with Netflix was already controversial because the firm produced The Crown, with the latest season four straying away from facts while exploring the troubled life of Harry’s late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

She said: “I think unhappily, it is very difficult to square up being a member of the royal family with commercial activity because there are bear traps everywhere.

“I’m sure it never crossed Harry and Meghan’s minds about The Crown, possibly being negative or damaging when they got their wonderful contract from Netflix.

“But the problem is that they left those gold standard advisers when they left Buckingham Palace, when they turned their back on the help that they were getting.”

The couple have remained members of the Royal Family despite their new venture.

They have also retained their HRH styles, although they do not use them.

Part of the Megxit review would have included a review of Harry’s military titles.

He was reportedly “devastated” to have to give them up, according to the Finding Freedom biography.

Before he stepped down as a senior royal, Harry held the titles: Captain-General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington, and Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.

But his “lifelong commitment” to the military was ultimately over when he chose to move to the US.

Mr Scobie and Ms Durand wrote in Finding Freedom: “Harry’s lifelong commitment to the military was why the Mountbatten Festival of Music three days later was a particularly difficult moment; he was set to wear his Captain-General of the Royal Marines uniform for the very last time.

“During a conversation backstage, on arrival, Harry told Major General Matthew Holmes; ‘I’m devastated that I am having to step down.’

“‘It was so unnecessary’, Meghan later told a friend of the decision to strip Harry of his military honours.”

After Meghan and Harry’s bombshell announcement, their website said: “During this 12-month period of review, The Duke’s official military appointments will not be used as they are in the gift of the Sovereign.

“No new appointments will be made to fill these roles before the 12-month review of the new arrangements is completed.”

The Queen is also thought to be creating a “new firm” made up of eight senior members of the Royal Family.

They will attend events and represent the Crown in small numbers from next year.

The new “slimmed-down” monarchy is believed to include the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Princess Anne.

But Meghan and Harry do not appear to be part of this.

Harry recently came under fire for appearing to snub his father Prince Charles.

The Sussex couple shared black-and-white photographs of themselves as children with both their mothers on the newly relaunched website for their non-profit organisation, Archewell.

The couple also published a letter to 2021 on the website, which said: “I am my mother’s son. I am our son’s mother. Together we bring you Archewell.”

But there was no mention of Charles, even though he set up the Prince’s Trust to help vulnerable people.

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan claimed the message was “shameful” and called for the Queen to remove their titles.

A Twitter user asked the Good Morning Britain host: “You really don’t like them Piers, do you?”

He replied: “No. I think they’re a pair of vapid little wastrels exploiting their royal titles for vast commercial gain whilst doing none of the duty that being a member of the Royal Family entails.

“It’s shameless, shameful & the Queen should stop them doing it by removing the titles.”
