Meghan Markle won’t follow Princess Diana on THIS whereas she will follow Catherine Duchess of Cambridge
Why Meghan will follow Kate rather than Diana when she picks Queen’s Christmas present
MEGHAN Markle will follow in the footsteps of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, when she gives the Queen her Christmas present, according to a royal commentator.
Richard Fitzwilliams told Express co uk that the US actress’ gift is likely to be “inexpensive and thoughtful” like Kate’s handmade chutney rather than “expensive” and “embarrassing” like Princess Diana’s present to the monarch on her first Christmas with the Queen.
It is believed the longest-reigning head of state likes practical but not overly extravagant gifts.
So Meghan Markle, a skilled calligrapher, may opt to give her fiancee’s grandmother an embellished scroll, according to Mr Fitzwilliams.
He said: “Meghan will be well aware of the royal tradition of giving thoughtful but inexpensive gifts to each other.
“Kate’s idea of homemade chutney was ideal. In contrast Diana, as in so many other matters, was not briefed and bought expensive presents which were embarrassing.”
Princess Diana is said to have gifted the Royal Family with cashmere sweaters.
Mr Fitzwilliams added: “It may have been this aspect that led the Duke of Windsor to describe the royal Christmas as “Dickens in a Carter setting” but when you have to choose gifts for the family that has everything it makes sense.
“Meghan is a skilled calligrapher, perhaps an embellished scroll would be both an unusual and appropriate present for the Queen.”

Prince Harry’s bride-to-be was once a freelance wedding calligrapher – designing wedding invitations for stars including Robin Thicke and his now wife Paula Patton.
Kate has previously spoken about her nerves leading up to her first Christmas in Norfolk over what to buy the 91-year-old.
She ended up making a batch of marrow chutney from her grandmother’s recipe.
The Duchess of Cambridge, who will join Meghan and Harry for their first Christmas as a couple at the Sandringham Estate, previously told ITV: “She really cares. I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas.
“And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?’
“I thought back to what I would give my own grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’ll make her something.’ Which could have gone horribly wrong.
“But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney.”
And Kate’s simple but thoughtful idea went down a treat and the Queen’s chutney appeared on the dinner table the next day.
Kate, who is pregnant with her third child, added: “I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day that it was on the table.
“I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since, she’s done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody.”
