Meghan Markle under fire: Prince Charles’ friend brands Duchess’ family as ‘COMMON’
MEGHAN Markle and her family have come in for extraordinary criticism from one of Prince Charles’ friends, who said her wedding dress “seemed to be made of concrete” describing her family as ”frightfully common” and her father Thomas as a “huge lump”.
Nicky Haslam, 78, was born to one of Queen Victoria’s goddaughters Diamond Louise Constance Ponsonby, socialised with Princess Diana, worked for Prince Charles and once sang in front of the Queen.
When Kensington Palace confirmed that Prince Harry was in a relationship with Meghan Markle last year, her new husband, whom she married in a glittering service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor in May, condemned the Press for its “abuse” of his then girlfriend.
But that has not stopped Mr Haslam from launching an astonishing verbal attack on Meghan’s family.
He criticised her £200,000 bridal gown made by Claire Waight Keller, despite the British designer revealing the Duchess told her from the start exactly how she wanted to look at the Royal Wedding and it took no less than eight fittings to create the final dress.
The dress featured pure lines and an open bateau neckline framing the shoulders, while the train draped in soft folds with a triple silk organza underskirt.
Meghan kept covered with three-quarter sleeves for modern modesty.
Silk for the dress was sourced after intense research across Europe.
Her stunning five-metre veil contained the floral symbols of all 53 countries in the Commonwealth.
But Mr Haslam said: “I didn’t very much like her wedding dress – it didn’t fit, among other things.
“It should of been made of thinner stuff – it seemed to be made of concrete.”
The designer believes the absence of Meghan’s siblings and father Thomas Markle from the Royal Wedding was actually a good thing.
Mr Markle didn’t travel to the UK for the service after undergoing heart surgery just days before the wedding, and had earlier been caught staging images of himself.
Mr Haslam reserved special criticism for Meghan’s father, attacking his appearance and weight.
He said: “They’re frightfully common.
“It would have been awful if that huge lump had been there.
“The royals probably don’t quite know how to deal with them.”
But Mr Haslam did praise Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, who did attend the wedding after flying into the UK from the US.
He said: “One person who wasn’t common was her mother.”
Kensington Palace declined to comment.
