Meghan Markle thinks she and Prince Harry are a ‘great love story’

For the first time, Meghan Markle has opened up about her year-long romance with Prince Harry, confirming that, yes, the relationship is very serious and that they are “really happy and in love.”

However, in a new cover story for Vanity Fair, the American TV actress is not revealing much more — as in whether she and Harry are contemplating marriage or whether she has met Queen Elizabeth II and received her approval for getting serious with her grandson. Markle, 36, also opens up  about how she’s handling al the media frenzy about her relationship with the fifth-in-line to the British throne.

“I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple,” she says. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months be

fore it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

Speculation about an engagement should heat up with this Vanity Fair interview. If Meghan didn’t want to tick off the queen or Kensington Palace, she would have gotten permission to sit down with this glossy international news magazine to talk somewhat openly about Harry.Royal watchers assume that Meghan, star of the TV show “Suits,” and Harry, 33, are getting ready to announce an engagement. They actually wonder if the two got quietly engaged during a recent three-week vacation in Africa, where they also celebrated Meghan’s 36th birthday.

Vanity Fair writer Sam Kushner, interviewing Meghan at her home in Toronto, where she films the TV show “Suits,” notes that the actress isn’t the usual kind of person to marry into the British royal family.

She’s a “commoner,” in the language of royal tradition. She’s also American and she’s a divorcee, from a two-year marriage to a producer. She would be the first American to marry into the royal family since Wallis Simpson famously wed King Edward VIII, forcing his abdication from the throne, almost 81 years ago. Moreover, Meghan also is biracial; her mother is black and her father is white.

Last fall, when Meghan’s relationship with Harry first became widely known, a tabloid alluded to both her race and her roots in Southern California to say say that the prince would be marrying “into gangster royalty —his new love is from a crime ridden Los Angeles neighborhood.”

Those kinds of reports prompted Kensington Palace to issue a rare comment on the prince’s romantic life — for the purpose of asking the media to back off Meghan.

“Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” the statement read. “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.”

Since then, Meghan insists that she practices what the British call “ostriching.” She told Vanity Fair, “I don’t read any press. I haven’t even read press for ‘Suits.’ The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.”

The word among royal watchers is that Queen Elizabeth if fine with Harry possibly marrying an American divorcee, as long she believes that Harry is happy and that Meghan truly loves him. Of course, the “stakes are obviously lower in the case of Harry” because he’s not likely to become king.

“The Queen is remarkably open-minded and she’s very tolerant,” notes Sally Bedell Smith, who has written biographies of Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana, and most recently Prince Charles.

Harry’s older brother, Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, was allowed to marry Kate Middleton, even though she’s the daughter of “a very middle-class family,” Bedell told Vanity Fair.

“The Queen just looked at who Kate was and that she was in love with her grandson, and that she knew how to conduct herself with dignity and discretion, and that was the most important thing,” Bedell said. “I would imagine that the Queen’s view of this would be: if they’re in love and they’re well suited, then they should proceed.”

Meghan confirms that the love between her and Harry is real.

“We’re a couple,” she explained. “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
