MEGHAN MARKLE married Prince Harry in May 2018 and was escorted down the aisle by Prince Charles – but the royal precedent was set in1960 by Prince Philip and Princess Margaret.
Meghan Markle ‘very similar’ to Princess Margaret says expert
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in their joyous royal wedding in May 2018, just under a year before they welcomed baby Archie Harrison into the world this month.
As the Duchess of Sussex’s father Thomas Markle was not present on the wedding day, Prince Charles escorted Meghan down the aisle and won praise for his touching act.
Amazon Prime documentary “The Queen’s Diamond Decades”, which originally aired in 2012, features archive footage from the big day in 1960.
Documentary narrator Patricia Hodge relates: “In the absence of her beloved father, the late King George VI, Princess Margaret’s brother-in-law the Duke of Edinburgh would give her away.”
The film shows archive footage of the royal wedding, which was the first in history to be televised.
Prince Philip is seen assisting Margaret out of her carriage and walking with her down the aisle of Westminster Abbey ahead of eight bridesmaids, including Princess Anne.

Margaret’s wedding tiara, the stupendously large Poltimore tiara, became one of her most well-known pieces of jewellery and fetched $1.7million at auction after her death.
The documentary continues: “Princess Margaret, the Queen’s younger sister, was marrying Antony Armstrong-Jones a talented society photographer who was an unconventional choice by royal standards.
“Finally, the public felt that their princess had found true love.”
Princess Margaret was 30 at the time of her marriage, mirroring Prince Harry who married his true love at the age of 34 after similarly being known previously for his glamorous partying lifestyle.
Prince Harry spoke in the BBC documentary “Charles at 70” about the moment he asked his father to escort his bride down the aisle.
He said: “I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’
“For him that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s going to be there for us.”

Royal: How Queen’s gown inspired Meghan’s wedding dress
Although Princess Margaret famously enjoyed the high life, in contrast to the clean-living, yoga loving Duchess of Sussex, a royal expert has drawn parallels between the two also.
Angela Mollard, speaking on podcast “Royals”, said: “In some ways Princess Margaret was like the Duchess of Sussex.
“We know that Margaret had great friendships with people like Dusty Springfield and Peter Sellers, and through her husband she was very enmeshed in the celebrity world and the great and the good.
“Interestingly, Harry’s been brought into that world through Meghan.”
