Daily Mirror Royal Editor Russell Myers discussed the bombshell interview in which Meghan Markle revealed she struggled with her mental health and accused a member of the Royal Family of being worried over the colour of her son Archie’s skin. Royal expert Russell Myers added the Royal Family needs to respond to the allegations in a way that is respectful to the claims.
Speaking on the True Royalty podcast, Mr Myers was joined by biographers Angela Levin and Rob Jobson to give their reaction to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s unprecedented interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey
Mr Myers said: “It’s very sad, I think there are elements of this that need to be taken very very seriously indeed.
“To have a young vulnerable woman, perhaps pregnant at the time, I think she was five months pregnant to saying that she was having suicidal thoughts.
“It is frankly distressing and the Royal Family do have questions to be answered.”
Mr Myers response came after Angela Levin discussed the claims of Meghan being a “prisoner” in the Royal Family.
She said: “(Doesn’t make any sense) that she was a prisoner. She said she went out only twice in several months.
“Well, I’ve been (told) that she’d often go out in disguise, she’d put a cap on and jeans and people didn’t recognise her.
“You can’t actually believe that she was kept imprisoned she made it sound as if she couldn’t go out because she was imprisoned.”
But host Kate Thornton clarified the claims and added: “She didn’t use the words imprison, it was suggested that she had to hand over a passport and a driver’s licence and her keys that when she joined the family.
“What she did say was that she felt that she was everywhere, as much as there was an oversaturation of her, but she’d been nowhere she was incredibly lonely, it was a dark and difficult time.”
Claims were also made during the interview that Prince Charles stopped taking calls from Harry.
Prince Harry said during the interview: “I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like and Archie’s his grandson.
“But at the same time, of course, I will always love him but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened and I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”
Meghan also revealed she did little research about the Royal Family before she started dating Prince Harry.
She also revealed the pair got married three days before their public wedding ceremony.
Oprah With Meghan and Harry is on ITV at 9pm on Monday March 8. You can watch the full interview afterwards on the ITV hub
