Meghan Markle: How Queen was greatest ally – before royal split erupted

THE Queen was Meghan Markle’s greatest ally when she first joined the royal family, it has been claimed.

A bombshell new book, Royals at War, produced by investigative journalists Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett, said Meghan was taken under “the Queen’s wing” when she joined the firm. Howard and Tillett’s account claims the former Suits star was “showered with gifts and guidance to help ease her into the new royal role”. One insider told the book: “Her Majesty has seen it all and could offer the duchess (Meghan) some helpful advice.

“Meghan would do well to nurture that relationship and pop over for an occasional cup of tea with the Queen.

“Meghan doesn’t need an invitation.”

It was also claimed the Queen loaned Meghan one of her own trusted aides when she started undertaking royal duties.

The authors say Her Majesty ensured her aide “escorted” the former actress when she went on her first public engagement after her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.

When Meghan Markle first met the Queen, she showed a big appreciation for her and the now-duchess said in her engagement interview in November 2017: “To be able to meet her through his (Harry’s) lens, not just with his honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother.

“All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her.

“She’s an incredible woman.”

Another insider said in the book the Queen had been “supportive” adding: “The HRH is a reasonable woman and accepts that marrying into the Royal Family isn’t easy and mistakes are going to be made.”

However, the tables seemed to turn in January 2020 when the royal couple announced they would be living independently in the USA.

After the news broke, Howard and Tillett claimed the Queen was “furious”, with an insider saying: “They want to become the world’s biggest lifestyle brand.

“If they are allowed to do so, the monarchy as we know it will cease to exist and a new ‘celebritised Royal Family’ is about to take over.

“They want to have their cake and eat it too.”

At the time of the announcement, however, the Queen insisted she was supportive of the decision to separate from the royal family.

She added in a statement in January this year: “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.

“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.”

The Royal Family declined to comment on the revelations in the book when approached for comment by Express.co.uk.

Royals at War is available online and nationwide from July 15.
