According to new reports, Meghan Markle is keen to break with tradition in one major way when she marries Prince Harry in May: by having her mother, Doria Radlan, walk her down the aisle instead of having her father Thomas Markle do so.

‘I’ve heard that Meghan wants her mother to walk her down the aisle, which would be a sweet moment,’ a source has told Us Weekly.

‘While they will always be mindful of traditions and the views of their elders, the day is ultimately about them and what they want to do,’ they added. ‘The day of the wedding itself will certainly hold a few unconventional surprises. Don’t expect a royal wedding by numbers. They want to involve their friends and family in as much as possible throughout the day.’

‘Their romance feels refreshingly modern and I think that’s something that everyone at Kensington Palace has felt incredibly excited by,’ a Palace source told the magazine.

The rumour has, of course, yet to be confirmed by the Palace, but should Meghan choose to walk with her mother, it would mark a major departure from royal tradition. A royal bride has never been accompanied down the aisle by a female relative: in 2011, Kate Middleton was joined by her father Michael at her wedding to Prince William; Diana was accompanied by Earl Spencer when she married Prince Charles in 1981 and the Queen walked alongside King George VI (Princess Margaret, however, was accompanied by her sister’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, after her father’s death).

Prince Harry is thought to have met up with Meghan’s mother numerous times; Doria, a yoga teacher and social worker, was pictured with the couple at the Invictus Games closing ceremony in Toronto last year, following Meghan and Harry’s public debut at the sporting event.

Harry and Meghan will tie the knot on Saturday May 19th at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, with the ceremony set to be televised around the world.
