MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry have the “vast majority” of support from the press and the British public but have made key “mistakes”, a royal expert has claimed.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been criticised in recent months, notably with the way they have handled details surrounding the birth of their first-born child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duchess of Sussex last week also faced scrutiny after she guest-edited the September issue of British Vogue, with some royal commentators suggesting Meghan was moving too close to the political sphere. Speaking to Express.co.uk, royal commentator, Richard Fitzwilliams admitted Meghan and Prince Harry have made “mistakes”, but have the “vast majority” of support from the press and British public.

He said: “I think it is important they appreciate that the vast majority of the press, I admit a few columnists and vile trolling online, but also the vast majority of the British public wish them well and certainly when it comes to the causes they intend to aspire, they are tremendously important today and for young people most particularly and those with a contemporary outlook.

“The fact they also want to, female empowerment, diversity and so forth, that they are championing things that are very significant, and also mental health – which is very very important.

“What is essential to get your charitable message across is to have populations that are receptive to it.

“Clearly the press and press intrusion, this is part and parcel of the royal goldfish bowl, there are aspects of handling, for example, Archie being a ‘private citizen’, that aspect of things, when he is seventh in line to the throne, when it is possible certainly under the current rules, although they may well change, that he could become his Royal Highness, when Prince Charles ascends the throne and given the global interest in them. It is a very difficult line to tread.

It is a very difficult line to tread. There’s no doubt there have been some mistakes there

Richard Fitzwilliams

“There’s no doubt there have been some mistakes there.”

He added: “My feeling is when you have tours abroad and they are coming up, the handling of that will be all-important.

“When they go to the United States, it will be quite literally a royal visit, a right royal visit, and Archie, of course, will be frequently photographed and in the news.

“So it’s really a question of doing what they intend to do, but doing it in a way which doesn’t give critics in the press and also, you want to feel there isn’t this distance.

“I think a matter as far as the royals are concerned. It is often this problem that if you are royal, like the Duke of Edinburgh and the driving near-catastrophe some months ago, when there appeared to be one rule for the royals and another for other people.

“The point is, especially if you are as youth-orientated and as orientated to contemporary issues, as Meghan and Harry are and obviously as they hope Archie will one day be, it’s important you take the vast majority of the population that are interested in these things, and also the press, as so far as it is possible, with you. Hence the fact small details and sudden decisions, particularly regarding the christening – they were unnecessary.

“It is important to concentrate, as they take on more patronages, this what we will see, they will be concentrating on things that really matter that will help people”.

Meghan and Prince Harry came under scrutiny from the media after their decision to keep the details surrounding the birth of their son Archie private from the press.

Archie Harrison’s christening was also kept behind closed doors with the British public not privy to information about the royal baby’s godparents.

The Duchess of Sussex then last week sparked fury among some after she guest-edited British Vogue’s September edition.

Meghan chose to use the edition to feature prominent female role models, including former First Lady Michelle Obama and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Speaking about the project, Meghan said: “These last seven months have been a rewarding process, curating and collaborating with Edward Enninful, British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, to take the year’s most-read fashion issue and steer its focus to the values, causes and people making an impact in the world today.

“Through this lens, I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light. I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the forces for change they’ll find within these pages.”

On Sunday the Duchess of Sussex celebrated her 38th birthday, and husband Prince Harry has added a touching tribute to his wife on Instagram, sharing a beautiful photo of the Duchess. The post begins: “Wishing HRH The Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday.”

Then the message from Harry follows and reads: “Happy Birthday to my amazing wife. Thank you for joining me on this adventure! – Love, H”.
