A “genuine and sweet” bond has formed, partly thanks to the babies.
On Saturday, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton sat next to each other at Wimbledon, and it was something of a rare solar eclipse event for royal-watchers. We hadn’t seen the two of them attend an event together, without their husbands, since last year’s Wimbledon (this time, they were accompanied by Kate’s sister, Pippa). And, as you’d expect, it was a bonanza for the body-language experts and lip readers, trying to analyze the current state of the much-discussed Kate-Meghan dynamic. Based on the Wimbledon photos of the two of them chatting, smiling, and leaning in close, the consensus seems to be clear: they’re buddies!
Yes, People Magazine has a photo on the cover of its new issue in which Kate is leaning over in Meghan’s direction, as if about to offer a delicious, kicky secret, while Meghan appears completely content and relaxed. The headline shouts “PRINCESS MOMS” (which sounds like the name of a summer action comedy) and the promise of details offering the “Truth” about their friendship. The magazine cites a royal source in its story that claims, “There is a sense of [Meghan and Kate’s] relationship strengthening.” (This almost makes it sound like Kate and Meghan’s friendship is some sort of mystical elixir scientists are working to perfect in a lab—which sort of feels about right, actually.)
The report notes that after widespread reports of friction between the sisters-in-law, the two were under “undue pressure” as the “whole world wanted them to be best friends.” The magazine says that motherhood has helped to bring them closer. Additionally, Meghan and Harry’s move to Frogmore Cottage, some 25 miles from the palace, has helped the two women bond, apparently, as it is “allowing them more time to be like family,” separate from the professional aspects.
People says that Kate and Meghan were “genuine and sweet together” at Wimbledon, and that when Serena Williams (a close friend of Meghan’s) lost the final, “Kate put her hand out and rubbed Meghan’s back to console her.” Royal correspondent Victoria Arbiter noted, “It illustrated a warm relationship between these two women who have young babies and are in similar situations in their lives.”
The two also were seen out together a few days before the final, on the sidelines of a polo match that their husbands were competing in, along with their children (it’s an outing we shall forever refer to as “The Prince Louis Sunglasses Festivus”). A royal insider notes in the piece, “[Kate and Meghan] are each a little more relaxed. They have more in common now.” Arbiter added, “Babies are a great leveler. The minute you’re bonding over your stories and sleepless nights, suddenly all the stuff that mattered before doesn’t matter anymore.”
We hope this leads to all sorts of new frontiers in their relationship: a casual tennis match at Kate’s place followed by some avocado toast, a sushi date together with the Queen, or perhaps selfies cross-posted to the Kensington Royal and Sussex Royal Instagram accounts.
