King Felipe of Spain trips up after that TENSE exchange between Queen Letizia and his mum
KING Felipe of Spain suffered his own embarrassing moment just days after footage emerged of a tense exchange between his wife Queen Letizia and his mother as speculation mounts there is a rift in the Spanish Royal Family.
It’s been a turbulent time for King Felipe and the Spanish royals after footage emerged of a tense exchange between his wife and mother.
And amidst the family drama, the King nearly suffered his own embarrassing malfunction in front of the world when he tripped on a rug.
The Spanish royal, 50, narrowly avoided falling flat on his face when he entered the ZarZuela Palace in Madrid today.
It is another embarrassing gaffe for the Spanish Royal Family who have hit the headlines of late for all the wrong reasons.
Video footage emerged showing a tense encounter between King Felipe’s wife Queen Letizia, 45, and his mother Sofia, 79, at the Palma Cathedral, Mallorca on Easter Sunday.
Onlookers witnessed Letizia standing in front of Sofia and reaching out to touch her eldest daughter Leonor’s hand, only to shove away Sofia’s hand.
The former Queen appeared to be trying to take pictures with her granddaughters.
But the altercation was so bad that the King was forced to step in to calm things down.
The incident sparked comments from other royals who condemned Queen Letizia.
Marie Chantal of Greece, who is married to Crown Prince Pavlos – Felipe’s cousin tweeted: “No grandmother deserves that type of treatment! Wow she’s shown her true colours.”
She then posted a photo of her family in a dig at Letizia captioned: “Happy grandparents! Family is what it’s all about.”
However, Queen Letizia, a former journalist, has since come out and said that she is very “hurt” by the speculation that the video has generated in the press.
Her friend and former colleague insisted that what the video actually showed was that she was simply trying to protect her daughter’s privacy from photographers and not trying to start a family tiff.
Her colleague, Imma Aguilar told El círculo: “I think they are the images of a mother worried about the image of her daughters.
“I talked to Queen Letizia a while ago, and she is worried and quite desolated by this situation; she is very committed to the care of her daughters, with the protection of their image, she worries who takes photos of them.
“She worries where they come from, who approaches them… It’s a very motherly reaction.
“It’s been silly, it’s not a serious issue, nothing has happened, it’s just a natural gesture.
“She’s not a person who has been educated from the beginning to have a certain public behavior, she’s very committed to her work, her profession, with the role she plays and, as a mother, with her daughters.
“She has felt affected, she is worried and hurt.”
Felipe’s trip came as he hosted an Ibero-American leaders programme in the palace.
It is only his second outing since the footage of his family being torn apart emerged.
The Spanish press continues to speculate about the rift – Diario de Mallorca said: “As is obvious from the footage, the situation was most uncomfortable for King Felipe VI, who tried to mediate as his father looked on with great surprise.”
