Kensington MP Emma Dent Coad says royals attack was ‘a joke’
After Sky News revealed she branded the monarchy “ridiculous”, the Labour politician urges critics to look at “real issues”.
A Labour MP who blasted her royal constituents has said her comments were “a joke” that had been “taken the wrong way”.
Emma Dent Coad, whose Kensington seat covers the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, urged her critics to “look at the real issues facing us” instead.
On Monday, Sky News revealed how she called the royals “ridiculous”, and called for them to lose their public funding.
She also mocked Prince Harry’s army experience, prompting fury from fellow Labour MP John Woodock, who rebuked the “highly inaccurate comments”.
Ms Dent Coad has released a full statement for the first time since speaking at the pro-republican fringe at the Labour conference in Brighton.
She said: “As MP for Kensington, where I was born and bred, I am ashamed of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s status as the most unequal borough in Britain.
“We have billionaire tax cheats – and four Food Banks where supplies have to be rationed.”
She pointed to a recently announced £3m renovation of Buckingham Palace, while a short walk away survivors of the Grenfell disaster are still living in “pokey” hotels.
They include a heavily-pregnant mother, who Ms Dent Coad said had no cot in her hotel room, nor baby clothes, and a disabled lady who has been moved six times and spent a day lying in bed in her own excrement because she was forgotten by her carers.
The MP also flagged reports of survivors contemplating suicide and a baby being hospitalised after being given expired milk by the council.
She said people are angry and “I’m angry too”, vowing: “I will highlight these issues loud, clear and often until they are addressed.”
