Kensington MP Emma Dent Coad criticised constituents Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge and the “whole system” of the Royal Family at the Labour conference on Monday.

Some members of the Royal Family are funded through a combination of private and public funding – including the Sovereign Grant which comes from the treasury.

Launching a scathing attack, Ms Dent Coad told delegates she felt the Royal Family should no longer be funded by the taxpayer.

The Labour MP said: “Their MP thinks the system is ridiculous. We should not be funding them.”

The Reigning in The Monarchy event was billed as a “discussion on the future of the monarchy and the reforms should promote”.

Continuing her attack, Ms Dent Coad complained it was “disgusting” the Duchess of Cambridge had reportedly bought jumpers at an estimated cost of £150 each when “that’s a food bill for a family of four”.

She said: “That’s absolutely outrageous.”

The Kensington representative also hit out at the BBC for producing “sickening gratuitous coverage of anything royal” and claimed the broadcaster was “very heavily directed by right-wing politics and the monarchy”.

She said: “It is a piece of the whole propaganda machine.”

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge live in Kensington Palace, with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in one of the most affluent parts of Kensington.

Labour MP Ms Dent Coad, who described herself as the Royal Family’s “worst nightmare”, won the Kensington seat by just 20 votes in this year’s general election.

She was thrust into the limelight almost immediately after the Grenfell tragedy, which killed around 80 people.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan called her an “amazing advocate for the neglected residents” who were left devastated by the fire, though Ms Dent Coad turned down a chance to meet the Queen.

The MP has also previously hit out against the Duchess of Cambridge’s family, comparing the Middletons to reality TV stars the Kardashians.

She said: “The Middletons are no different to the Kardashians.

“A lot of the disaffected Tories who are so sprightly around the narrative of Kensington Palace have described the Cambridges as vulgar, which is hysterical really.”

Ms Dent Coad said she “despised” the way tax is spent on the Royal Family and that she would rather have David Beckham’s family as royalty.

She said: “I say the Middletons are like the Kardashians now, because they are such film stars.

“It just shows how much it has all changed.

“I would say if we are going to have princes and princesses then I would rather it was the Beckhams, because they have earned their own money.”
