KATE MIDDLETON could be granted a new title when after the Queen steps down. But what could this be?

Kate Middleton was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton in 1982.

When she married Prince William in April 2011, she became Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Since that time, the couple have been referred to by these official titles, with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, using the name as well.

Prince George in fact using Cambridge as his surname at school – something likely to be copied by each of his siblings.

However, Kate will not be able to keep this title forever.

When the Queen dies, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge will be given a new title.

After Queen Elizabeth II passes away, the heir to the throne, her eldest son Prince Charles will became the British monarch.

By proxy, William and Kate will move up the line of succession – an undertaking which comes with new titles.

After, his grandmother dies, Prince William will become the heir to the throne.

The current heir to the throne, Prince Charles is also known by the Prince of Wales.

This title of Prince of Wales is not something he will retain when he ascends to the throne.

Instead, the title is traditionally given to the heir to the throne and was officially granted to Charles at his investiture 50 years ago.

Charles is in fact the 21st man to be given this title.

When Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, she became the Princess of Wales.

Technically, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, as the second wife of Prince Charles should now have the title, but out of respect for the departed Diana she turned it down, instead she is known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

However, after the Queen’s death, the Duchess of Cambridge is expected to accept this title in honour of Prince Williams mother.

While Prince William becomes the Prince of Wales, Kate will be offered the title of Princess of Wales.

Princess Diana, known as the people’s Princess, was exceptionally popular with the public.

The younger female royals, Kate and Meghan Markle are also quite popular and therefore it is likely that the public would see the acceptance of this title as a way to honour Diana.

Rather than take it as a snub as many predicted when Camilla married Prince Charles and royal fans speculated as to whether she would take on the title.
