KATE, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William are “relieved” Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have decided not to spend Christmas with the Queen and other royals at Sandringham, according to a report.

The Duke of Cambridge believes his younger brother and his wife are in need of some time out of the spotlight after what was said to be a stressful year for the new parents. A friend of William told Closer Weekly the father-of-three accepts Harry’s decision but may find it “strange” not having his brother by his side on Christmas Day. The pal said: “William and Kate are somewhat relieved that they won’t be at Sandringham.

“William does, however, feel that it’ll be strange not having his brother around.”

In October a palace source told the BBC that William and Kate believed the Sussexes were “in a fragile place” and were hoping the couple were “all right”.

Therefore it comes as no surprise the Cambridges believe spending Christmas away from the glare of the media is probably best for Harry and his American-born wife.

Every year the Queen, 93, invites her extended family to join her to celebrate the birth of Jesus at her Sandringham House estate in Norfolk.

After breakfast, the royals head to a Christmas morning service at nearby St Mary Magdalene Church.

Afterwards they make their way back to the country mansion and exchange gifts and tuck into dinner.

The whole affair is very structured, with specific times set for meals, activities and gatherings.

Harry, 35, is thought to have missed only one Christmas with his grandmother and the wider Royal Family in the past.

In 2012 the Duke of Sussex was stationed in Afghanistan where he spent the festive season with fellow troops.

Harry and Meghan are on a six-week break from royal duties and are believed to have celebrated Thanksgiving with the duchess’s mother Doria Ragland, 63, on Thursday.

The couple are thought to have flown to the US with Archie in tow.

The tot, who will turn seven months next week, is no stranger to long-haul flights, having made the trip to Cape Town and back.

Their pause in royal duties comes after Harry and Meghan, 38, spoke candidly about their struggles in a Channel 4 documentary shot during a 10-day tour of southern Africa in September.

Meghan admitted her first year as a royal wife and mother had been a “struggle” while her husband spoke of friction with William.

Harry said although “stuff happens” he and William would “always be brothers”.

He said: “We’re certainly on different paths at the moment. I’ll always be there for him and as I know, he’ll always be there for me.”
