Princess Diana is one of the most famous fashion icons of all time. Ahead of what would have been the late royal’s 59th birthday on July 1, we take a look back at some of Diana’s most iconic outfits from some of her favourite designers, including Versace, Jenny Packham and Amanda Wakeley.

From her elegant ensembles to her jaw-dropping eveningwear, the Princess of Wales will always be our favourite fashionista.

With its nod to the bomber jacket, the tweed suit that Diana wore on her Balmoral honeymoon showed the new royal’s ability to tap into the street style of the 1980s.

The Princess never disappointed fans on her official engagements. Here she went on parade in a smart cream suit designed to pay tribute to her military hosts.

Who could forget the midnight-blue Victor Edelstein dress she wore to dance with John Travolta at the White House in 1985?

In this shot taken at the family’s country home, Highgrove, in 1986, the young mom teamed a candy-striped shirt with white overalls and deck shoes for a sweet, fresh look.

With her strong shoulders and statuesque figure, Diana found that one-shouldered gowns always flattered her. This electric blue creation by Versace is the perfect example.

From the label most closely associated with her, Catherine Walker, this world-famous creation was studded with 20,000 pearls and popularly dubbed the ‘Elvis Dress’ because of its collar.

The drama of this plum velvet gown was all in the back, emphasized by a knotted string of pearls. It was worn, appropriately, to the UK premiere of Back to the Future.

As an independent, single woman following her divorce, Diana loved sporting a sleek, sexy silhouette for eveningwear. She wore this fitted shift for a gala performance of Swan Lake at the Royal Albert Hall, two months before her death.

With its sharp tailoring and bold color block combination, this suit, seen here in Hong Kong in 1989, was a favorite of the Princess.

Here is the stunning ‘revenge dress’ by Christina Stambolian which Diana wore to a soiree on the day her husband admitted to infidelity in a televised interview.
