Princess Diana death: How did Princess Diana die? When did she die?
BRITAIN is remembering Princess Diana 20 years on from her tragic death in August 1997. But how did she die?
Princess Diana died from serious injuries after a terrible car crash in Paris at about 12.22am on August 31 1997.
Her then boyfriend Dodi Fayed, the son of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, and her driver Henri Paul also died in the crash.
Only Princess Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived the crash after their Mercedes struck a pillar in the Alma underpass near the Seine.
Mr Paul hit the pillar after losing control of the Mercedes as he tried to shake off paparazzi photographers chasing them in cars.
The paparazzi had tracked Princess Diana and Dodi from the Ritz in Paris where they were staying and had dinner that evening.
Romuald Rat was first photographer on the scene of the crash in the Alma underpass.
Retired fireman Xavier Gourmelon has spoken about how he performed CPR on Princess Diana in a desperate bid to save her life.
He said: “I held her hand and told her to be calm and keep still, I said I was there to help and reassured her. She said, ‘My God, what’s happened?’
“I gave her some oxygen and my team and I stayed by her side as she was taken out of the car.”
Princess Diana went into cardiac arrest at about 2.10am and was pronounced dead at 4am at Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris.
After the crash, police tests found that the alcohol in Mr Paul’s blood was nearly three times over the French limit.
In April 2008, an inquest jury at the the Royal Courts of Justice ruled that the Princess and her boyfriend Dodi were unlawfully killed.
The inquest ruling blamed the deadly crash on the “gross negligence” of her Mr Paul and the paparazzi, who had been hounding her car.
It found that alcohol impaired Mr Paul’s judgement, while Princess Diana and Dodi may survived if they had worn seat belts.
Prince William, then 15, and Prince Harry, then 12, were staying at Balmoral with the Queen and other members of the royal family when their mother died.
The princes have spoken about their last heartbreaking phone call with Diana, who was ringing from Paris.
In a recent documentary, Harry said: “All I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was.”
Diana’s death sparked an unprecedented national outpouring of grief.
About three million people lined the streets of London for her funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 6 1997.
After the ceremony Diana was laid to rest at the Spencer family home, Althorp. WHERE IS PRINCESS DIANA BURIED?
