Grace Kelly was ‘caged bird trapped’ at Monaco royal wedding

GRACE KELLY looked like a “caged bird trapped” on the day of her royal wedding to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, with one commentator suggesting the Hollywood star didn’t want to be there.

In that year alone, Grace made an astonishing five films.

In 1955, on the release of ‘To Catch a Thief’, she travelled to the Cannes Film Festival in France.

There, as part of a PR stunt to promote the film, which was also filmed in the south of France, she partook in a photoshoot with Rainier III.

This meeting marked a pivotal moment in her life.

A year later, in April 1956, the pair wed in a lavish ceremony at St. Nicholas Cathedral, Monaco, in front of 600 people and tens of millions more watching at home.

The marriage offered Grace an enviable lifestyle.

Yet, it was the beginning of the end of her lucrative and successful acting career.

Many have since questioned how happy Grace was following her marriage.

Royal commentators have long suggested that Rainier and the promise of being a real life princess was, in Grace’s eyes, the ultimate career topper.

The idea was floated in Channel 5’s documentary, ‘Grace of Monaco: Hollywood princess’, in which royal author Wesley Kerr claimed Grace was “trapped”.

He said this was visible from her wedding day, explaining: “Where you see her as a bride in the famous outfit, I think she does look like a bit of a caged bird sat behind the veil.”

In Channel 5’s most recent documentary, ‘Grace Kelly: The Missing Millions’, forensic accountant Gemma Godfrey delves into Grace’s missing millions.

Her acting career unsurprisingly gained her vast amounts of wealth.

She also came from a wealthy family.

At the time, Monaco was thought to be cash-strapped.

With the introduction of Grace, the principality became one of the globe’s most fashionable locations, attracting millions of dollars worth in tourism.

Before this, however, Grace was expected to present Rainier with a dowry: a sum of $2million (£1.4m).

John Kelly, Grace’s father, was according to some commentators outraged by the request.

Recalling John and Rainier’s first meeting in the US, Leslie Carroll, a royal author, said: “When Rainier came to visit him, he was like, ‘Hey, I’m the King of Philadelphia. You’re in my kingdom now Mr.'”

Despite her father’s reservations, Grace was determined to marry her real life Prince.

Claims suggest she may have parted with some of the cash herself.

Ms Carroll said: “Grace had to show up with not only her glamour and cache as on Oscar winning actress, not only with her Catholic womb, but with her cheque book.”

Investigator Ms Godfrey claims Grace’s net worth should have been around £40million – regardless of any royal assets.

Yet, when she passed away in 1982 aged 52, her will left just £74,000 and a derelict cottage in Ireland which once belonged to her grandparents.
